Surrey League 3rd cat Cutmill 1 April

Postby Matthew Ives » Sun Apr 01, 2007 2:53 pm

Well, I was a bit disappointed with the outcome of my first Surrey League road race, but more of that later.

It didn’t get off to an auspicious start when I found out that the organisers hadn’t received my cheque which I sent over 3 weeks ago to enter this race.Luckily I had £20 on me and entered on the line.

After arriving I saw Adam, the only other ACC-er there. We had a little chat and he seemed really up for this one, despite having done the 2/3 cat race only yesterday afternoon. I was feeling a little more apprehensive: I hadn’t got any real miles in my legs yet this year and was a bit concerned with the distance. Well, at least it would be good training, I thought. The apprehension deepened when I got chatting to another rider who told me about the course: basically, he said, it’s really hilly. It’s either going up or going down and you’ve got to be near the front on the climbs cos people just let wheels go when they crack and it’s easy to get dropped.
Great , I thought. That’s all I need. Just get round, I said to myself. I’ll be happy if I just get round.

Anyway, out of the neutralised section things sped up a bit and sure enough, it was pretty lumpy. I was stuck near the back for most of the first two laps which wasn’t doing me any favours and seeing Adam up near the front, with his suspiciously tanned legs, I decided to move up a bit more. On about the third lap there was a split on the big hill : about a mile and a half long drag that really saps the legs, at the top of which was the finish line. Luckily by this stage I was riding in the front 10 and felt pretty comfortable on the hills. Once the selection was made on the hill, the hammer went down as 25 or so riders saw an opportunity to get rid of half the field, which is basically what happened. Unfortunately for Adam, he was in the wrong half of the field and got detached. Pretty soon after I think he climbed off since it was obvious the break wasn’t coming back. Kindly, he stayed behind and cheered me on at the start/finish line. Thanks mate :)

By now I was realising that I was one of the strongest guys on the hill. Either that or people were bluffing really well. I was riding in the top 5 or 6 riders for most of the last 3 laps .However, despite feeling good, there was a problem. My legs were beginning to cramp up. On the penultimate lap it became quite a problem and I was doing all sorts of things to try and alleviate the problem: drinking more, spinning gears, stretching my legs etc. All to no avail. On to the last lap, I stayed near the front. The lead group had now been whittled away to less than 15, I would guess. People were getting shelled out on the hills mostly and found they couldn’t get back on.

As we turned the corner onto the last 2 miles I thought I had a good chance if only my legs didn’t cramp up any more. I knew which guys to watch, which guys seemed stronger on the big hill and I stayed on the outside so as not to get boxed in. Just as the final hill began to start to rear up, a guy rode off the front. It wasn’t an attack, people just let him go and no one wanted to chase. In 30 seconds he had 50 metres and he was away. Onto the lower slopes and there were 6 of us fighting it out . As I stood on the pedals to go with the accelerations, my legs just locked up. The cramp meant that it was almost impossible to turn the pedals, yet I carried on fighting the bike. At one point I thought I’d have to climb off, but that would have been too embarrassing with only 50 metres to go.
In the end I came in 6th and was a bit disappointed with that. I felt I was worth a top 3, but maybe I’m being too optimistic but I felt I could have done better. Once over the line and I’d got my breath, me and Adam headed back to HQ for some recovery drinks.

All in all, a really testing course and decent marshalling meant everyone felt pretty safe on the open roads.

Cheers
Matt

Well done Matt - and plenty of races to come. You will definitely be part of the 3rd cat ACC team when they get to race altogether.

I started cramping too yesterday after 2h30 - having "flash cramps" which are really scary as you keep expecting the moment when a proper, paralysing cramp will come. I too drank what I had left, and luckily wasn't further impaired. Maybe should've added a bit of salt to my drinks.

Well done Matt, Max Ramirez from Mosquito was riding and he suffered cramp in the closing phase and I am not sure whether he finished. He was really annoyed as he had been up at the front for the whole race like you.

Good result, I really like Cutmill but was not allowed out to play today.

See you on the club run next week.

Cheers

thanks guys!

Hi Marek,

There was a Mosquito up near the front and I did wonder if it was Max. The only problem is I've only ever done one club run with him and can't remember what he looked like. Is he quite a stocky chap and rides a blue Ribble? I noticed he was quite strong on the hills for a big chap.

Hey Sylv, I reckon the course would suit you pretty well with all the up and down bits. There's another 3rds race there on the 29th April, which I'm going to do. Maybe we could get a few more ACC's out for that one. There were about 10 Dynamo's in the race today.

cheers,
Matt

Yeah i echo most of what matt said, we agreed he would write the report as he finshed!

I did indeed clomb off woth 4 las to go, after an hour of racing. The race had re-grouped, but id had to work hard with a couple of others to get it back. We regrouped just before the hill that split us previously, and lets just say, yesterday was weighing very heavily on my legs so i clmbed off at the top of the hill, having been dropped anyway.

I think the biggest mistakes i made were, a. working last night, and b. not warming up enough before the race. Lessons learnt!

Oh well, was a good result for matt, despite his philosophicalness (if thats a word!?) I then had chat with one of the organisers, who used to be elite, and spent six years in racing in france full time. Had some interesting truths about le dopage. Hmmm.

Anyway, im still glad i rode (half of it) was good to at least phsycologically race two days running. Good prep for the 3 Day next weekend, anyone going to join me? Oh and by the way, where is the entrance to Dunsfold Aerodrome?

Cheers,

Adam

My misses is 6 months pregnant and has just been diagnosed with SPD, no nothing to do with Shimano. Basically she can hardly walk as her Pelvic muscles are out of line due to the pregnancy. It is not good, so I felt a bit guilty leaving her at home with our little one considering I was out most of the day yesterday.

Cutmill is a great circuit and if it is on later in the season I will certainly be there. Well done in getting an hour under your belt today Adam, it is a tough course and after completing your first 2nd cat race yesterday I think that will be good training for next weekend.

Make sure you have an easy week, just turn the legs over, save all the top end stuff for the racing.

Cheers

Good idea Sean, when my misses was pregnant with the first one I took up cycling and spent as much as I could on bike bits and trained really hard.

Bloody hell Matt, you're a hard man to please! Congrats on a good top 10 result, even if you aren't happy with it.

Adam - 2/3 race on Saturday, work in the evening and then another 3 race on Sunday.

Marek, Sean congratulations guys.

Well done Matt an excellent result for another Mr Average.

I started to get cramp yesterday and it was the first time I put shorts on this year which I'm sure was the reason.

I'll probably will be doing the 29th so will see you there.

Having children is good for performance as long as you have your wife under control. Apparently you get a natural testosterone boost as your body thinks it needs to get stronger to look after your family.

Paul, i had a couple of cramps yesterday too, and it was the first time this year i have worn only shorts...

Can you please elaborate on why this would lead to cramps...?

I think you can get cramp if your muscles are cold.

Well done on racing 2 days in a row - should do you some good for next week.
