Woohoo!

Aodan, Dombo, Bo-Gilly, ceejay, Taz and myself headed off into the mother of all winds. We nearly got blown into orbit going up Farthing Downs! A good ride out through Happy Valley and past Caterham in very muddy conditions. Sticky going up hill, slippy going down. We took a big loop out the back of the Caterham area and back through Woldingham. The yummy mummys were out in force at Woldingham school I've never seen so many Range Rovers - not a speck of dirt on any of them mind :D

At Woldingham we hit the A22 back towards Purley and as I was feeling good I went for it. Managed to blast along for 5 miles at around 19-20 mph which I thought was pretty good for an unfit dude on an mtb. Home now bacon sarnie digesting lots of mud to clean off stuff and a broke spoke to fix.

Here's the link to the trail http://connect.garmin.com/activity/63464026

Great company and a good workout in tough offroad conditions.

Cheers- Snoop

Knew it was going to be hard work when I left this morning - straight into the teeth of a howling gale. And for some reason, people wanted to kill me between Hackbridge and Coulsdon South  Four of'em had a go and those I managed to 'speak' to didn't like it when I pointed out that it's rather worrying to have even a couple of tonnes of metal aimed at you or passing rather too close for comfort... And that was only one way! Only one tried on the way back...

Anyway, despite all that, it was a good ride. Sorry I couldn't stay on the front but I really can't push the wind at the moment (too light and not strong enough) - and I didn't feel that going backwards into the group was going to help the group dynamics...

Just filling in a bit of time before I complete the amazing transformation from mud-speckled, windswept dishevelled cyclist into something that looks almost lady-like  I've even made a decent stab at getting the nail varnish on without doing my fingers too much at the same time and getting it on fairly smoothly too

See those of you who are going later and others next week.

Great mtb ride today with Snoop, ceejay, Bo-Gilly and taz, ably led by Aodan. Got to CSS in record time thanks to a Force 4 southerly blowing straight up the A23, then a muddy but very enjoyable route up Farthing Downs and through the woods to Woldingham School before we headed back for home(loads of yummy mummies trying to manoeuvre Rangeys in the mud without getting them dirty caused much amusement). Tucked in behind Snoop Armstrong for his 20mph run down to Tescos where we split, Taz and I heading into the teeth of the wind back to CSS. This was a struggle, my speed on the flat (admittedly on a knobby tyred mtb) reduced to 11mph - about as fast as I'd normally cruise up Box
Hope to be back on the road steed soon when it's not too windy, icy or raining :D

Enjoyed the club run yesterday. Went with the B training group as have not trained much in the last few weeks. Also, good old Paul Hone made me feel great by indicating I looked liked I'd aged since he last saw me. Was a bit worried about being able to stay in, but with the help of the strong headwind the speed was relatively slow which meant that sitting in was not too hard.

A few in the group found the going a bit tough, I think we started with 6 and ended up at the dual carriageway with just Ant, myself and one other guy who was going pretty well. We got caught up by the A group just at the Dual Carriageway, so was perfect timing for a combined blast down the dual carriageway. I got a bit carried away and sat on the front for a bit too long but was good fun.

Up towards the sprint and I was falling off the back a bit after hitting a huge pothole and nearly losing my handlebars which moved down a cm or so. A bit of a chase got back on and managed to sit behind the metronome of Mr Kennett. Paul Hone had apparently decided he'd had enough and had called the group a bunch of girls and went off on his own, he was now a couple of hundreds yards off the front. As we got closer to the sprint point I decided to bury myself and try to bring Paul back to make up for his earlier comments. I put my head down and gradually reeled him back in. Dave K and Ant were on my wheel with the rest of the group a couple of hundred yards back. Caught Paul and went through him for Ant to then take the honors with Dave K just behind.

Good blast back with Ben and I having to chase down the group that had left earlier and then I turned off for home. 100km on the clock, was good fun, wish the weather had been like today though.

Cheers

The above comments say you are. The idea of the B group is to encourage riders to move up from the 19s rather than than an ego boost for old timers.

Fair enough, will try and sit in with the A group next week. Seriously didn't expect to be going that well yesterday, maybe the running and no booze for January has brought on a bit of form.

Cheers

Hi,

As Marek's 'one other guy' I would like to thank Marek and Ant for letting me wheelsuck down to the dual carriageway. Sure I did take turns at the front - but they were few and short.

I'm keen to continue with the Bs but we need to see if we can have a few more in the group. I have no doubts that Marek's current form is beyond B standard but reducing the numbers in the Bs is not going to help - equally I recognise that for those of A standard sitting in with the Bs is not ideal. Any thoughts? Volunteers from the As to take turns on riding with the Bs? Encourage a few more 19s to take on the challenge?

For anyone who is interested the two B rides this year from CSS to the dual carriageway were clocked on my Garmin as:

8 January - moving time 62.15 minutes; 20.70 miles, 949 ft climbing; average 19.9 mph

15 January - moving time 65.00 minutes; 20.81 miles, 989ft climbing; average 19.2 mph

Yesterday felt harder, no doubt due to the headwind.

See you next Saturday.

Well Marek gets my vote for sandbagger of the year :D

Good ride yesterday taking the B group again. Hard work in the wind and this meant the splits in the group started pretty early. Marek was very strong yesterday and did a lot of the damage. I sat up and waited for Lee and Nick and tried to tow them back up to Marek and Mark but they both struggled to hold my wheel so I keft them and bridged the gap back up to the leading pair. Not sure if this the way to go about running the B group, yes its a training group but is the fact riders are getting dropped so readily going to put people off joining the group. Some pointers or feedback would be welcome. Good to see so many people stepping up to give the B's a try though, well done folks.

Also regarding Marks comment it would be nice if someone would step down from the A's now and again to let me get back with the A's.

As for the ride, was good fun, hard at times but a blast. Great work from Marek leading us out for the sprint, just managed to out drag Dave K for the honours. Paul H was going well today, either that or he was boing an unsociable git and didn't want to ride with us as he kept buggering off into the distance.

Feel like I'm going well at the mo, that extra bit of turbo trainig is paying off.

Roll on next saturday for more of the same. :D

I think we just have to be more careful who we allow in the B group from now on.

The B group is probably going to be the only group in the club that is forever splitting up en route to the dual carriage way. People stepping up will take a while to stay in the main group and people ,like me , who can last the pace for a while before the old pins start to sag and then you either go to the dual carriageway on your own or via Lambs Green (I think thats right).
Everybody I've spoken to seems to be enjoying it whether they are dropped or not so I hope it continues.
The fastest ones in B's will want to go to A's and thats fine which means the rest in the B's will probably find a pace thats good for us and in the long run will ,I think , be more beneficial .
One more point before I bore the pants off you, if the A's become too big would it be worth splitting this group so essentially we have a three group race to the dual carriageway ? Everybody does a bit of extra work that presumably can only be good.
