The Tour de France kicks off this weekend

Postby matt chapman » Thu Jun 30, 2011 10:30 pm

The Tour de France kicks off on Saturday so I was wondering if anybody fancied watching the race down at the South London Harriers clubhouse in South Coulsdon?

Big TV with a bar stacked full of beer, what more do you want! Must point out that we do not currently have freeview, however, I'm going to take a box down with me, so in theory we should be able to watch the coverage on ITV4 but in practice this has not been tested, oh well I'm sure that 'it will be alright on the night'!

We have changing and shower facilities at the clubhouse so if anybody wants to drop a bag off before the club run I will open up it up from 8.50 to 9.05. There should be space in the clubhouse to store bikes out of sight from the local scallies.

The clubhouse is located down the alley way to the side of the Old Comrades Club, 194a Brighton Road, Coulsdon, CR5 2NF

All welcome, coverage starts at 12 so no slacking on your way back from Box Hill!

I did a London to Paris ride last week:

http://www.londres-paris.com/site/html/home/index.php

benefitting from the windbreak that is Magnus Backstedt (at least when I could stay in touch).

If anyone has nothing better to do tomorrow evening there is a 30 min programme on the event on British Eurosport at 9.15 pm straight after British Eurosport's Stage 1 highlights of the Tour de France.

I hope to be down at CSS tomorrow.

How many of Phil & Paul's cliche will you hear?

1) "Big". As a prefix to Jens Voigt or George Hincapie.
2) "The sprinters will be licking their lips"
3) "In the red zone/putting the hammer down"
4) "The belgian/dutch/basque fans know their sport of professional cycling"
5) “Digging deep into the suitcase of courage”
6) "There goes my mate Lance" or "Lance Armstrong, the only man to have won the tour 7 times...."
7) "we went over this hill this morning and I can tell you its not easy"
8 ) Paul: " Here we are approaching Le Chateau de ........., built in 1167 by King Henry II, it's the first of it's kind in France..."
9) 'Big' Julian Dean - The Champion of NZ.....
10) Leakygas
11) "He's hammering those pedals like he's working in a mine"
12) Phil: "When you wear yellow, you ride like 2 men" errr, that's called having a steak
13) 'it's now really the heads of state..'
14) "At these speeds, a touch of the brakes will see you go from 5th to 55th"
15) "Don't try this at home"

Yep. But you still love them though and they'll have you on the edge of your seat on the sprint stages.

Anyone here ever tried to talk solidly for several hours when there's not a lot happening WITHOUT using the odd cliche?

1) "Big". As a prefix to Jens Voigt or George Hincapie.
...

1a) "Little". As a prefix to "Tommy" Voeckler.

    16) The writing's on the wall for the breakaway.
    17) Every second counts in the Tour de France.

and if you're watching on the other side, not a cliché but a Kellyism / Fren-rish:

    18) Classement.
