BRIGHTON (AND BACK) CLUB RUN 21st MAY 2011

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

The Night Shift.

I set off at 11.30pm last night for my rendezvous with Paul T at Rusper at 1am. The night rides I've done before have been with others so there's been a bit of noise from chat and the lights from other bikes as well as mine lighting up the little bit you're riding in. Last night after Reigate and turning in to the lanes at Reigate Heath and it was just me. Quite spooky  when there is absolutely no noise apart from the wind in your ears, everywhere is completely pitch black and the only light is the bit in front of your wheel. A couple of times I thought I heard something behind me, was only the wind passing my ears but the tone varied, and when I looked back to check if there was a car coming there was nothing. I mean nothing, so dark I couldn't even see me own back :!:

Up to Rusper and there was a couple of bright lights as Mr.T was there waiting. Was nice to hook up and not continue to be just one small blob of light in the darkness as we rode side by side with no worry about finding cars out there :) .

Paul had sorted a nice route down which was all unlit lanes but fairly direct running sort of parallel to the A23, going through Colgate, Slaugham, Ansty and Hassocks to Ditchling. up and over Ditchling Beacon is complete darkness, which makes it seem shorter, and then fly down the other side to Brighton and our stop at Buddies 24 hour cafe arriving at 3am.

Buddies had it's usual mix of night dwellers, plus a couple in lycra. For those not in lycra the dress code was short tight dresses for the young women and glassy-eyed slightly gormless expressions for the young men.

After some grub, bowl of spag bol for me, we set off for home at 4am with it still dark, although there was a smidge of light just across the sea visible. For the return home as we had to get back for the Southern Counties 10 TT we took a direct route up the A23 to Handcross. At that time of night the road's pretty much empty and it's a bit flatter than the lanes and would save our legs a bit. Lanes navigation in the dark slows the pace a bit too so may have made us tighter for time.

Paul was suffering a bit so I towed him all the way up the A23 and then from Handcross we turned in to the lanes as the light was up and we cut across to Horsham. Back at Horsham, about 5.30am, and we stopped at Paul's house for a cuppa and for him to grab his skinsuit and his TT bike, and then on to the HQ.

On the ride to the HQ at Broadbridge Heath the mist was really low and we thought it a bit dodgy but the sun was burning it off quickly and in the half hour or so 'til our start times it had gone completely. Nice to see Mark McL at the HQ again as I haven't seen him for a bit, and sign in and off to the start to see Jon H and Tim who were pushing off today. Checked my computer at the start and my "warm up" for the 10 had been 90 miles and now straight in to a 10 on a road bike with not a single bit of aero kit, this could be interesting :P .

Bit of banter with Frank the timekeeper and a nice shove from Jon  and I was off. I rode it pretty well considering (it was a good morning for a TT), on the hoods all the time and trying to keep low, and was only caught by my minute man and no-one else. As soon as I crossed the line it was straight in to a little gear and spin back to HQ.

Back there and tea, cake and chat. Ian had done another good ride and clipped a second off his PB (24.07), but unfortunately Rob had had an accident :( (unclear what happened but Rob's not a risk taker on the bike so perhaps a slipped handlebar or grabbing brake as no-one else was involved - just guessing though) and was a DNF. Ian and Jo went off to find him and hopefully it's nothing more than a few scratches. I did a 26.07 (shame I was slowed to a stop by a lorry at one roundabout) beating Paul who's time went up initially as 28.14 but he said it was 26.14 with Mark fastest ACC of the morning in 23.18.

After a bit more chat and it was back on the bike for the 30 mile ride home  . Back to the lane where the start was and then the steep climb up to Rusper (ouch) and back through the lanes on the reverse of the club run. I was feeling a bit tired by now and had a flat spell at Leigh for about 15 minutes but then perked up again.

Home with just under 8 hours and 135 miles on the clock. I'd been up since 6.30am the previous day by now apart from about a half hour kip in the evening so was dog tired and slept through the Giro, fortunately having had the foresight to set the video so just about to stick it on and enjoy their suffering now :D .

Great "day" and ride, interesting to mix a long night ride and race in one trip but can honestly say it won't be a regular thing! Sorry no pics, it was too dark :!:

Phil, looking very trim, and the 16 mphers about to set off from CSS

The 17 mphers about to head off - Carole and Robyn getting carried away with all the excitement!

The 17 mphers - which split into two groups at Bletchingley - at TURNERS HILL with various waifs and strays we picked up on the way. Still smiling despite being about an hour behind schedule having had FOUR punctures and a broken chain repaired!!

Fuelled with seafood pasta and fish and chips the 17 mphers about to leave 'Very Unsunny Brighton' - typically, as luck would have it, the only place anywhere in southern England absolutely covered in cloud. From L to R JP, Sam, me, Ron, Brian (who didn't ride back and went shopping with wifey instead), Marcus, Earle, Carole, Pete and Amy.

Resting and refuelling at Nonna's in a Very Sunny South London. 8)

Knackered but really good fun, thanks everyone for making it such a grand day out. 102 miles at 16 mph average. :D :D 8)

Good hard ride to Brighton and back yesterday. Left CSS with Ilya, Nick, Wal, Ed, Peter, as we turned left on Rockshaw road before Merstham, Ilya and Nick decided they didn't like the fast pace so shot off down the A23. Just then we saw Andrew G riding up the Merstham drag at the end of his ride

Now I love these lanes down to Brighton and we made full use of them heading through Bletchingly then up Old Hollow past Tulleys farm where we too the lovely little back lane down over Ardingly Reservoir which is a steep climb.

We were through and offing all the way down riding a relentless pace, Lindfield we turned left to Access Slugwash lane and kept to tiny lanes to the foot of the Beacon, this was a great section which cut out the nasty bit through Haywards heath and the busy road down to ditchling

Up the Beacon and Wal took the honours :D Then we missed out the fast decent onto the main road and rode over the downs through Hollingbury which gradually descended all the way to Brighton.

Said hi to everyone and Joyce at The Regency where Mike, Robyn, Kozlo Pete and myself had a lite bite at the Brighton Lawns cafe on the sea near Hove, maybe we can look at this cafe as a stop next time as theres far more seating and quick cheap cafe food.

Mike and I then raped it back to Nonna Rosa's in under 2 hours at a mental pace  Mike was super strong all the way round! Up over Devils Dyke, then Hammer ponds, Colgate, Rusper then reverse clubrun to Coulsdon.

Very suprised to see a couple of other already there but then found out they had cheated and taken the train

Alans group arrived after 15 mins, they missed the left turn after Warninglid and ended up riding up the A23

Great ride, thanks everyone for coming, boy my legs were aching big time last night.

Nic and I set off with George’s group but soon decided that pace wouldn’t suit us so we formed a two men team and cycled at steady pace down to Brighton. One more rider (sorry, I don’t know your name) dropped of George’s group and cycled with us until Horsham.

We caught with 17s at Turners Hill. Jon was trying to fix chain which looked like rubber band :D , we couldn’t help much so decided to carry on. Phil H joined us and now we were a team of 4 (there was a non ACC rider who joined our group somewhere between Surrey and West Sussex) which made the ride easier as each of us spent some time on the front. We quickly reached Ditchling but didn’t stop there, carried on and after fast descent to Brighton (or is that Hove) stopped at every single traffic light as they changed to red on our approach.

Quick bite at Regency and off we were; Mikhail, Nic and I. At top of Devil’s Dyke we caught up with Serena, Bridget, Del, Andy Phil H and a few others. From then on we cycled in a large group with mixture of fitness levels. So there was lots of regrouping at top of hills.

After reaching reverse club run section we split up as some stopped to buy food and drinks and some carried on. Road re-surfacing at Newdigate didn’t help either. I continued with Serena and Phil bumping on to Nic again?! It didn’t take us too long from there to reach Nona’s where we met Jon’s group.

As for distance, my Garmin recorded just over 158Km.

I seem to be making a habit of returning from Brighton up Reigate Hill because "it's the quickest way home". Technically, true but it's not the easiest or most sensible.

Just about to get my spoke key out and try and undo the damage caused by That Pot Hole. I think there were about 8 in our "fast 17s" group so 4 or 5 riders would've been on the outside. To get 6 punctures then is something of an achievement.

Ilya: that route avoiding Haywards Heath (courtesy of Random Bloke who was also going to Brighton) seems to work quite well. Would do that again.

Good day out. Stupid tan lines are coming on a treat.

Yes, it also seems as if it was a shortcut. I need to check the map.

It wasn't a shortcut (although it could've been if we'd turned left at Wivelsfield) , but it avoided Haywards Heath - which is important.

I won't forget my colostomy bag next time.
Carole I don't think you understood Earl when he wispered to you he could do with a massage.
This was a grand day out, as has been said already, great company, great route and a great ride.
The route back (ta Captain) was so much fun with fantastic rolling roads with no climbing that enabled some competitive riding with the engine Ron and Road Runner Sam leading the way.

Roll on next month.

+1 for the cafe.
