REGULAR SUNDAY CLUB RUNS START FEB 2011

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

Olympics 2012 route run 10 September

Postby Wanderer » Wed Aug 31, 2011 2:21 pm

Some of the people at LOCOG, where one of my sons works, were disappointed to have to sit around in windowless Portakabins on Horse Guards Parade while the London-Surrey Classic was on - ensuring it passed off OK, liaising with the services and so on - and they are proposing riding the course on Saturday 10 September.

I don't know what level the LOCOG riders are, but I suspect they aren't club cyclists, more the 9:30 starter for the London-Brighton charity ride type. I'm guessing of course. My son certainly isn't a club rider. So it might be a bit below ACC, or just of interest to 15s and 16s.

When I say "course", they are skipping the Mall-Richmond Park and Richmond Park-Mall bits because they just don't see the point on a Saturday when the roads in SW London aren't closed off, and there might be Fulham or Chelsea traffic to cope with. Nothing else on the route will be closed off either, and of course the Olympic 2012 route does follow main roads in general, so it won't be like the Surrey lanes club-run, but at least those who ride it will know what the course will be like for the pros. Apart from the crowds, the bunched peleton, the speed, the sweet shop stops, the lunch and coffee breaks, the traffic, the Fulham Road bit, the massed sprint and the pee stops, that is.

Whether everyone decides to do Box Hill once, twice or nine times, I just don't know.

John

At the moment it looks like a 9am meet at the Roehampton Gate car park, but if you're late, there are one or two MapMyRide maps you could download and you'll catch up soon. I'm doing it, as a gesture of paternal loyalty. Is anyone interested?

This Sunday's CR is a 40 mile loop from CSS to Henfold Lakes.

Weather looks ok, cloudy but possible showers, so if it we do get any rain, Henfold should have enough shelter for us.

Out via Chipstead, Box Hill and Ranmore, then on through Dorking and Holmwood to Henfold, with coffee at about 23 miles.

Route back via Newdigate, Leigh, Betchworth and Reigate.

See you at CSS at 9:30!

Good ride today with George, Rich, Steve, Ben, Katie and Alan (McTaffy).

We got to Henfold with no real rain to speak of. just a slight drizzle in the last mile or so.

The cafe was rammed with people having breakfast, including a group from Kingston Wheelers, and we saw Jim leaving just as we arrived. Cake was abandoned by everybody! We all had egg, bacon or sausage sandwiches, some had combinations and Steve even had a side order of 2 helpings of black pudding..... much to the anguish of McTaffy who had missed them on the menu board!

Back out on the road and heading back through Newdigate, the rain started to fall. No problem for George, who rode on in short sleeve top and shorts (damn that Le Col gear is good!), but far too much for Steve, Rich and I who stopped to pull on our rain capes. Katie had been the only one sensible enough to wear hers from the cafe!

As we approached the Betchworth bridge, George brought us to a halt to let a car cross, inducing probably the winning entry for world bike dismount of the year from McTaffy. A slight lock up and skid of his rear wheel, bike touches kerb, McTaffy falls off bike, completely unclipping in the process, lands sitting on his arse and disappears into the hedge! Cue much sympathy and rolls of laughter from the rest of the group!

Back then past the deer park and back on the reverse club run route at Reigate Heath. I left the rest of the guys at Reigate to head home to Horley. George was threatening to take the rest of the group up Reigate Hill and past Fanny's Farm in the rain, but as I left I think the route was being changed to a more gentle reverse club run option!

48 miles for me and some great company as ever.

I'm away on holiday from next Sunday and will miss the next 3 Sunday CRs. I'm trying to get somebody to step up and take over for this period, so please post here or PM me if you're willing to take over on any of the next 3 Sundays.

The Olympic route we followed over Box with Del a week ago was good fun so we could do that again as well.

Sunday ride is happening. Normal drill: 9:30 at CSS. The weather forecast keeps changing so I'm not setting the route in stone yet (some roads I was going to take are iffy in the wet).

Be there or be dry.

Well, you often get a variety of abilities on a Sunday ride. Today we had four fast riders and one fat bloke off the back. Wearing a VC's armband.

At least the weather was mostly nice and there was black pudding.

If you had seen fit to mention this before I'd have doubled the fat bloke quota.

Nice ride today Phil, cheers :) I'd say there were 3 fast riders, yourself and 1 rider deep in the red!
