CLUB RUN - A GRAND DAY OUT - SAT 26th FEB

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

I had been expecting a tough ride this week, thinking Paul, George, Richard, Rob & Dan would all want to be stretching their legs prior to racing next weekend. What the heck, I took my race bike - any excuse ;-)

[quote="George"]
I arrived at CSS a little late only to hear Capt'n Jon yell the training group had just left and were on the DC, Andy W, Darren and myself didn't realise they were heading to Nonnas for a photo shoot so we shot off at a hard pace on the CR to try catch the A group up!

Shame you missed us George, we could have done with a little more firepower in the A's, with just 4 of us chasing about 8 B's. We came across the B's on a group puncture fixing mission. No sooner than Nick's had been mended and people were rolling out when Ant realised he'd also got a flat. We'd decided to wait - well there wasn't going to be a queue at the cafe, was there?!

Half a dozen working, doing 30-60s turns on the front before peeling off - except Serge who seemed to like it out on point (for a few turns at least ;-) ). Just 2 of us arrived at the lay-by, the rest seemed to prefer a short-cut. Lee apparently tried to take an even more direct route across the fields  (hope you're OK Lee).

2 man through & off, with Paul easily taking the win - going well just in time for Dunsfold next week.

Thanks to Jon for taking the majority elsewhere. No queue for tea or the loo :D When are you going again?

What with the photo-shoot & puncture-fest, I headed straight home with Ant & the Shadow, leaving the rest to get beaten up by George & Paul over Box Hill.

P.S. We must have upset the traffic light fairy somewhere along the way as virtually every single set was on red

What a read. Heartening - encouraging - fun.

Top work to all.

While you all had fun and got wet - we had fun and stayed dry: Took the thames clipper down to the O2 arena and Keira had a bash on the drums courtesy of the good folk at Gibson.

 Thanks for asking. I'm fine. The right hand turn at the bottom of the hill after Rusper caught me out slightly. I found myself on the wet gravel which I didn't want to brake on and probably lose the skin on my backside so I headed for the grassy bank and did a girly flop into the weeds. It wasn't as girly as I hoped for because afterwards the only gears I could use where ten and twenty.

[quote="NeilAS"]Would add my thanks to Jon as well. Despite the less than ideal weather, it was a great ride; great route (more hills, but very nice), great company and great tea and nosh at Priory.

Is this the new CR Jon, will you alternative between this and Charlwood, or is this route just going to be used for ocassional variety sake? No strong preference - I enjoy it all - but it was a good route (and perhaps the hills might be good training for the June sportive!).

So thanks again Jon, and to guys for the lead back - via Chipstead - to Coulsdon. Now all I've got to do is clean the bike ... again!

Thanks, Neil, yes, despite the disappointing weather, it was great fun. I'm still not certain exactly where to take this 'alternative saturday' idea. I need some more feedback from members but I'm keen to do it (or something similar) very soon. :D

[quote="Phil Hawkes"]It was a jumbo-sized 18s group. You would've thought that a group that big travelling at speed (and mostly in ACC kit) would be obvious to any drivers thinking of pulling out ... Still, I liked the route. Glad I got my puncture out the way before reaching CSS. A good day out.

I think the weather made things like the potholes seem worse. Also I was being cautious of pinch-flats because my bling carbon pump proved useless for actually getting a decent pressure into my front tyre. At least it matches the frame.

Looking at the map (without knowing the roads) would it be possible to avoid the A22 section by going South down Godstone Road into Lingfield, west along the B2028 and up Bones lane to meet that little circuit they hold the Newchapel races on? Just a thought.

The important question is: where is the sprint point?

I'll look again, Phil, like you not too keen on the A22 but it's a short stretch and did the job. I thought about the B2028, it is a bit fast and furious at times and I'm not keen on having to do a right turn off it, hence I rejected it. But as i say I'll have another think.

Sprint point? Not needed - it's a mountain top finish!!!! - something for the mountain goats among us!

Nice ride back Keith thanks. Things got ugly between the Shadow and myself on the run back to Cousldon as we tried ripping each others legs off in the bus lane, it was brutal and painful  Good fun though. went better on way back as per usual. Can we start the club run at Charlwood please
