REGULAR SUNDAY CLUB RUNS START FEB 2011

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

11 of us out today.

10 started at CSS - Ant, Alan, Andy, Ashley, Ben, Nick, Peter, Phil Hawkes, Richard and me. At the top of Ranmore, we were joined by our second Phil, who caught us after arriving late at CSS.

A cold start, but we soon warmed up with the steep ascent of Portnalls Road and then continued along to Chipstead. We then had a nice fast descent into Mugswell, before crossing the A217 at Kingswood and continuing on through Walton and Headley, before another great descent through Little Switzerland to Burford Bridge.

There was some muttering about the benefits of the climb through Westhumble to Ranmore, but everyone agreed to the climb and we dragged ourselves up past the nasty kick at the top, round the hairpin before regrouping at the back of Denbies, where we picked up our second Phil! :)

At this point we broke all CR rules and agreed to change the route. The fast descent off Ranmore is a cracker, but a little dangerous when the Sunday morning trips to the Amenity Tip at the bottom are in full flow!! So, we went the opposite way! Along the top of Ranmore, we turned into White Down, around the tight hairpins and another fast descent to the A25 at Abinger.

Over the A25, we continued up through Abinger Common and then up the long, but gentler climb of Leith Hill, before the reward of another fast, sweeping descent down to Ockley.

Things flattened out after that as we headed across through Capel to Newdigate and a really well earned cafe stop at Taphouse Farm. Cakes all round, double cake for me and pie, coleslaw, rice and a side salad for Andy, who demolished a meal that Phil Hawkes can only dream of! :D

On the way home we split into 2 groups after Newdigate, with Ant, Ben and Phil H returning via Box Hill and the rest of us following the reverse club run home.

The weather was great today and the company excellent. We had a reasonable spread of riders in the group, but we rode well as a group, with re-groups at the top of each climb.

As Alan said, my legs are also telling me that today was a hard ride, but still a good one. About 46 miles in all for Andy and I, as we set off together from his house in Reigate. I'm guessing most people probably did around 45 - 55 miles today.

Some other memorable points today:

1. Just how does Ben keep his bike so clean? Andy could have eaten his monster pie meal off it........ if he wanted a severe case of food poisoning!

2. We rode quite a few sections of Alan's sportive route. Great climbs and descents. It should be great, so get your entries in! 8)

3. Nick has lost his climbing legs and he'd be really glad if anyone has found them. because he'd like them back! But he dragged himself round the course and he was there with us at the end. :P

4. And I'm starting to get my fitness slowly back. I'm still leading the rides from somewhere near the back, but at least I can see the group ahead of me now. A weekend of good progress for me. :P 8)

Finally, the Sunday rides are coming along well. We'll probably try some longer runs, when the days lengthen and the temperatures improve.

It'll be great to see a few more people joining us, as these rides really do provide a nice complement to our successful Saturday CR.

Ah bah :( Did want to be out on this one but I felt so queasy and rough on the Saturday ride - even after I dropped off the 17s and took the short cut to Charlwood, my head was achy and swimming...

Hope to be better for the next Saturday ride, let alone the next Sunday ride.

Could do my ride to Cobham again - again a hard climb up from Dorking but worth it for the descent to Effingham - or could do Clandon (includes a slight CTC moment where we walk over the A3 via the footbridge at Wisley - but believe me there's not much choice on route otherwise and it's on lovely little lanes)?

Anyway, shall liaise with you, Del, over the next week or so... :D

I haven't been on a club run for ages (bike been in cupboard while trying to sell flat) so cheers to Del for an excellent ride yesterday. 65miles on my computer all in. Really good route with some good climbs and fast decents. Great to catch up with some familiar faces.
Taphouse, lovely chocolate fridge cake.

Thanks for leading the ride Del; it made a nice change to my usual routes around Toys Hill/Ide Hill. 60 miles total for me according to Google.

Sunday ride starts at 9:30 tomorrow as usual at CSS.

We'll be heading out along Chipstead Valley Road and up How Lane, following the L2B bike ride route down to Burstow, then through Copthorne and Worth up to the summit of Turners Hill.

For those on Mother's Day duty, Turners Hill gives a point to bale out and head back early, as on our Summer Club Runs to Brighton. For those staying on, we'll probably loop out via East Grinstead, Lingfield, Crowhurst, Tilburstow Hill and Bletchingley, before dropping back through Merstham and home to CSS.

As ever, pace around 16/17, but we've had a number of stronger riders out on recovery rides and it's worked well. Cafe stop to be sorted, but maybe Tulleys, Priory or possibly Kinght's Garden Centre at Bletchingley.

See you all at 9:30 tomorrow.

I like a straight glass so went for the non frills 19s. My first 19mph of the year and I was happy with the well formed group with 2 vice captains and a pretty evenly matched group. We picked up Steve B around half way there. With short rotations we kept the pace high and steady against the wind. As Mark rested on the turn to Lambs Green I tried an early break and was quickly caught but Steve took up the front of the group and turned up the burners. This split the group and 5 of us continued on back of Steve's magical wheel. By the air runway I was done and dropped off. Steve I think had another group in his sights and I think caught them winning the line. With the tail wind I was happy to return to the church solo and keep my work rate reasonably high. 5 or 6 of us more or less stayed together for the Merstham drag and by dint of some trafic lights I was first to the cafe. Great ride, here are the numbers http://connect.garmin.com/activity/76888936 19.3 out and 19.7 back. I think it would have been around 20 if we had done the dual carriageway so I think a pretty fine pace

[quote="Jon C C on a Bianchi"]well. how'd it go? :D

Sorry for the late report. I've been a bit busy since Sunday!

It was our lowest turn-out so far with only 4 brave souls turning out. I did think that Mother's Day might put a dent in our numbers. Not sure if this was the case, but Ant, Ben, Ron and myself made up a perfectly formed group! 8)

So off we went on a sunny and crisp morning along Chipstead Valley Road, before picking up the L2B route at How Lane, which everyone remarked is a surprisingly stiff climb. Along the top through Chipstead, we turned right down Markedge Lane and past Fanny's Farm towards Merstham.

Turning out along Gatton Bottom, we encountered some loon in a car who was offended by us riding 2 abreast on a wide road with nothing coming in the opposite direction, but it was the only negative incident on a good day.

Over Gatton and through Merstham, Ant stormed up Church Hill at Nutfield, like a man with a Cancellara motor in this bike, dragging the 3 of us along in his wake.

We then descended Coopers Hill Road and continued along through Outwood to Smallfield, where we took a short break. Ron was on call and had to answer a problem in one of the buildings his company manages, which he sorted out from the roadside and off we went again!

On through Copthorne, we started the long climb up to Turners Hill, where we managed to keep our formation all the way to the top, before descending back down to Crawley Down and Copthorne, accompanied by some rather odd sounds from Ron's brakes!

We returned via the pot holed and cratered hell that is Smallfield  , before heading back via Redhill Aerodrome to Priory Farm, coffee and cakes. We had to refuel Ant on the last 3 miles, as he bonked after a combination of Training Group B, a late Saturday night and a number of turns on the front on Sunday took their toll. On the way to Priory. Ant was convinced that my sense of what constituted 3 miles to go was, er..... a tad optimistic!

Ant, Ben and Ron then head home via CSS and I turned back to Horley. Despite the small numbers and the annoying headwind, we covered around 40 miles, averaged a smooth 16.4 mph in Agreeable company, and were back home for lunchtime and the Tour Of Flanders.

We hope to see more of you in 2 weeks time! :D

Thanks Del and co for a good ride and route. Hard day with the A's not the B's on sat plus a mad thrash back with Steve B and co meant my legs were a little heavy on sunday and I hadn't fuelled up properly for a hilly ride so ran out of energy but soon recovered. Thanks for waiting guys.

Hope a few more people start supporting these rides especially now the warmer weathers on the way. We cover some great lanes and countryside.

Sounds brilliant. I guess mother's day did account for the lowish turn out. I can't make this Sunday - my son Ben is playing footie but that should be it for the season. :D

This Sunday I'm looking at two options.

Either out to the Surrey Hills, taking in Leith and Holmbury Hills, then back via White Down, Ranmore and Box Hills. Great route and some tough climbs, but probably a little longer than we have been riding. Maybe plan on being back at CSS between 13:30 and 14:00.

Or, out through Farthing Downs and Caterham, to Woldingham, Godstone, Tilburstow and Bletchingley. Still some tough climbs, but a bit shorter. Probably back at CSS nearer the normal time of 12:30 to 13:00.

Usual rules, 9:30 meet, 16/17 mph average (good recovery ride). Let me knwo what you think. I'll work out the route and cafe stops.

OK 1 vote from Jon and 0.5 vote from Amy means Woldingham has it.

I'll work the route out and find a cafe!
