Club run 18/09 - now a general discussion of the club run...

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

Did that include cleaning them and checking them over before races to stop them falling apart midway through. :D

I see your "How to win over potential new club members" course went well.

Ive managed to encourage a number of new members to join over the years. Ive helped them with mainentance on their bikes, training advice and even written training programs so feel like Ive done my bit.

If I had a friend whose only reason for not joining ACC was because we did the same ride, I would be pretty sure I could get him to join by focusing on all the things he would like about the club including the fact that there are alternative rides.

[quote]Pah! For a newbie you seem to think you know a lot about speeds and routes on the CR.

There, saved Paul replying to you.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion and everybody is entitled to comment on that opinion if they wish. Phil is talking about his personal experience and not about what somebody told somebody else about our CRs who they have never been on.

Bravo and chapeau to you. I merely passed on an observation that was made to me. And I am sure that, like most of us, you come across friendlier in person than from behind a keyboard :D

You're not going to be demonstrating how to bunny-hop the planks are you Sylv  .

Marcus it involves riding as hard as you can for an hour with your lungs burning bright red and forming a nice autumnal glow in the back of your throat, which can be seen by spectators when you reach the "dismount and sprint up a muddy hill wheezing like a dirty old man" section.

Cross is good fun and I like the HH singletrack twisty-turny bits at the back. They twist and turn like a twisty-turny thing so much that towards the end of a race you can still be trying to remember whether the next turn's a left or a right :D .

I have received a PM and understand I may have upset some people with my 'Alternative Missionary Cult' comment. If I have, please accept my apologies and bare in mind most of my comments are tongue in cheek and not to be taken too seriously.

HOWEVER, I only posted this in response to criticism of the rides I enjoy i.e. we are boring, dangerous, a laughing stock, rubbish cafe etc.

If people want to do alternative rides, it is no problem with me. I suggest that on the forum you focus on the positives of your ride rather than percieved negatives of ours and you will not get any disparaging remarks from me.

While this may not be the case with the person who PM'd me, I suspect that there are political/personality issues going on here and I hope these are resolved amicably without damaging the club.

Whoever is captain next year, I hope they make sure they take the middle ground. I have been going out on ACC CRs for about 10 years now and there has always been a good turnout and while there is no harm in making tweaks, any major changes could be risky. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Perhaps prospective Captains should post their mandates so we know what they are standing for.

Cheers

Well the fact that someone PM'd you would in my mind suggest that they wanted to keep the conversation "private"

Anyway, perhaps I have completely miss read things!! What I've seen being posted is just people stating there opinions on some changes to help the club evolve and offer a variety of rides. I have not seen anything to suggest people rubbishing the "normal" cr and I mean normal in the sense that its the most used or most popular cr. I for one go on the "alternative" which in actual fact is the "normal" cr for me as I like the variation of different routes every week. The last time I went up the A23 was probably a year ago and that route is probably the real "alternative" cr for me. When people say the route is boring or the Charlwood cafe serves below par coffee and cakes then these are opinions and everyone has the right to voice their 2 pennies worth. As for the political/personality issues going on, well we are a club of 100's and thankfully we are not all of the same views and of course you will have clashes of personalities and differing ideas and long may it last.

I await the backlash

Good point Paul, here goes, and apols for spelling etc I'm on a train in Scotland shiggling about a bit.

In simple terms I think the club would benefit from more encouragement. So the CR as is is fine, and so are the alternatives, it's not one or the other it's what folk want to support and organise together and do. Let's just encourage people to participate in cycling, and to participate in making the ACC club runs enjoyable and optional. No mandate...he he.

I think communications matters. I would bring back the lanterne rouge (or similar) and just try to weave that together with forum and web and other web sites and local paper too. I think that would encourage more involvement in and with the club.

A little more focus on racing, or competing generally could be fun and useful too. And I think learning from other clubs could be really interesting too. Not only on the competing side, more generally as well.

I'm hesitant to go beyond that as we've not yet seen the output from the club survey.

I'm motivated to help make ACC as good, as inclusive and as encouraging as it would like to be. I have experience of this kind of thing from my world of work, I enjoy this kind of challenge, and working with people and helping them get the best from folks genuinely motivates and excites me.

I'll check in again on Friday.

Cheers - Snoop

PS - oh yeah and I would try to encourage folk to try a different venue for club dinner.

I assumed the AMC were going to have an alternative club dinner anyway.

The PM'd conversation has been kept private
