Club Run Saturday 20 Nov 2010

Postby Tim Coales » Mon Nov 15, 2010 7:35 pm

Hi all, this is what is proposed so far, (I'll try and edit this as people give me info so you only have to read this 1st post if you're in a hurry!)
Don't forget to BUY YOUR DINNER TICKETS from Joyce at the Pine Cafe, or I'll have some at CSS/Nonna Rosa's on 27th. or send a cheque (payable to Addiscombe Cycling Club) to me at 159 Old School Place,Croydon. CR0 4GB along with your address and I'll send them to you...
Any alternative routes/destinations planned:
A) Snoop: I'll be out again doing a more sedate (and flatter!) ride out to Box Hill via Walton, Little Switzerland - and stopping in Walton for coffee n cake. If anyone fancies a slower, shorter (around 25 to 30 miles) ride - well it's more of a natter with a gentle spin chucked in - I'd be happy if you wanted to join me.
B) Andrew G: Steady 18s - Same way out as this week (Chipstead, Walton-on-the-hill, Brockham, Parkgate, Partridge) From Partridge people can turn for the cafe if they want to join others although I will carry on to...
Rusper, Colgate, Hawkins Pond, North Horsham, Rusper, cafe stop at Henfold Lakes (at 40ish miles), on to Box Hill but up Headley Road climb instead, Headley, Dorking Rd run back to CSS. Approx 100k CSS to CSS.
C) Pete S: We shall head down to Tulleys Farm for our stop. With an extra loop down to Ardingly then up, it's always up, to East Grinstead through the lanes past the reservoir, climbing rocks and the Scientologists. Then, I'll try and find a quiet way back through Lingfield, Bletchingley and home.
Regular Charlwood Club Run
Training Group: Keith Lea (or 19's if no TG)
19mph:
18mph: Jon Camden
17mph:
16mph: Phil Nash (or 17?) / Amy Robinson

J4F/Beginners: (not this week but some interest for Sat 27th Nov - Claire & Sophina from J4F on 6 Nov)
Return Routes
Regular (Horley/Lonesome Lane/Earswood/Redhill):

Bump! I know I can be a bit...unreliable at times, koff koff, but I've checked forecast tomorrow seems to be dry so I am definitely out cycling. If anyone fancies a more gentle easy ride to get back quick for the xmas shopping (already - jeez!) you are very welcome to come along.

Whatever you're up to - have a good fun ride.

Cheers - Snoop

Mike Ingram, Marky Mark and I twiddled off up towards Walton then out round Epsom Downs, through Headley, and up Box Hill. From there we pushed on to Walton where we stopped at an excellent café for coffee, bacon sarnies and a bit of Rudolf's Reward. Shortly after that we made our separate ways home. (see clicky link thing for route details).

I clocked 26.5 miles if I'd remembered to switch the thungumajig on when leaving home probably would've worked out around 32 all in all.

A lovely ride through some nice on the doorstep countryside with a couple of good mates.

I can't make next week but I'm planning to try Tim's new J4F on Sept 4th (if it's on of course).

How did everyone else get on?

Cheers - Snoop

Shame you missed us Nick. Just 2 others joined me for this nice route out. We headed up Chipstead Valley, wiggle off for a cut through Walton-on-the-hill rather than just straight down the main road, then drop down Pebblehill Rd. Would have been later than half past as we were a bit late leaving. At the RAB at the bottom of Pebble it's straight over the RAB and then right and fork left to Brockham through the lanes, no A25 bashing.

I had a great ride today, just a shame there was so little in the way of takers, good job the voices in my head keep me company.

It was quality rather than quantity though as I left CSS with Jon CC and we picked up Colin just down the road. A thoroughly agreeable pair with me for the Chipstead/Brockham/Parkgate route and we had a nice ride down these lovely lanes. The ones leading in to Brockham and then Old School Lane (with an old teacher alongside me  ) are beautiful even on a "riding in a cloud" day like today.

After Parkgate and the long ride up Partridge, from the other side to the "normal" club run, Jon and Colin turned left for the Pine cafe and meet up with others.

For my ride I now added quantity, a few extra miles, to the quality, great lanes. Carried on through Rusper and climbed up to Colgate and then along one of my favourite roads in the area, Grouse Rd becoming Hammerpond Rd. This is a smashing country lane with hardly any traffic which has nice views across the fields on both sides and then meanders through the woods just before the Mannings Heath golf course.

At the turn for Doomsday Green I headed in the opposite direction for North Horsham and then the steepish climb back up to Rusper. As I wasn't having to worry about sating anyone elses appetite I decided to give a cafe stop a miss and just popped in to the Rusper Stores for a tasty homemade sausage roll. A run back down to Newdigate and over towards Box Hill but gave the overly familiar to the point of being a bit boring now Zig Zag a miss in favour of the longer, scenic climb up to Headley. Unless you want to set a PB up Box Hill then Box Hill return groups should do this climb (longer but gradual) instead sometimes as it's a very nice road.

Back through Kingswood and waved to Phil as he was leaving Nona's and home for lunch with a very enjoyable 75 miles in the legs.

The revised route to Charlwood I've been using is in the Routes section - here

Nice write up - glad Colin caught up with you. He would have been seriously disappointed with our pace

You mentioned quality v quantity on the miles front. I think it's the same on the people front too. Look how persistent Pete has been with his alternative rides, and how consistently well supported they now are. That has taken time. In an established environment changes can take a while to come through. Sadly most folk give up on their good new ideas before they have a proper chance to work. I am confident you will get more people coming along. You're a good rider with good knowledge and the word will spread and people will give it a try - as long as you are still there to take them out. Keep the faith mate.

And on a related subject...Jon Camden kindly offered to call my ride today. I nervously declined. My bad. Jon thanks for the encouragement I shall not decline your kind offer again.

Note to the thought police - this is not in any way a criticism of the club run which continues to be very popular.
(You never know who is reading over your shoulder eh? )

No sign of Sam at Coulsdon South (probably still in the bathroom  ) so left him to his own devices and headed out with Andrew  on his excellent route to the cafe. Joined by default by Colin who arrived at CS late and had no choice but to join us! . The three of us had a very agreeable ride. Thanks Andrew! :D

Rode back with a group that included Mark M, The Shadow, Alan M, Robbie, several others (add your names here!) and a couple of strong first timers (I think). I rode with Grant at the back - keeping everything in order  . Sam wasn't quite ready to leave the cafe and said he'd catch me up - he didn't  . Unbelievable bit of bad driving as a car attempted to turn into the path of our peleton!!  CRAZY!!

Alan M and I battled it out for the best of the rest KoM prize going over the common/golf course. I nearly got written off by a learner driver turning into my path along the Linkfield. I had a bit of a shout as I swerved past her - not at the driver but the instructor - an AA Driving School instructor no less - what the %^&* was he thinking!

Waited for Sam at the church and we rode to Nonas via Rocky Lane (it's a deceptively bitch of a climb!!) and Fanny's and then through Chipstead - fantastic fast descent into Coulsdon. It's a great alternative to riding up the A23 and we (the CR) ought to think about using it more. Great coffee (I'm going to talk to the Pine cafe) and cake (I had the coffee and walnut), an agreeable chat and home back to Redhill the way we came. 52 miles door to door. Another Super Saturday. thanks everyone. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

That's a really good point Jon - we've probably never said anything to them about it before

Well, I was still struggling today despite the ache that scared me off to the doc's having gone and so far so good on the medical results. My legs seemed to ache most of the way and they really ached plus my lower back after my puncture on the way back.

I think we were quite late getting to Charlwood and my hot chocolate was too hot to drink fast  so most people had gone by the time I got outside. There were a few left so I went over to get my bike, put my helmet and gloves on... and they'd gone. I was completely unable to catch them as my legs didn't seem to understand the concept of pushing without burning with lactic acid.

A few riders passed me as I was changeing tubes but I said I was ok - then the final group went by and I struggled to pump the tyre up. The pump just didn't want to know the valve and I could hear more air hissing out than I was putting and no matter how often I tried to realign the pump on the valve I still couldn't get in properly until after 5 mins swearing at it all. And then I barely had the strength to blow the s*dding thing up.

Oh well, I don't puncture very often (fingers crossed) so I needed the practice

Well I as per usual went out on Petes alternative ride, along with Robyn,Andy, Geoff, Dave, Conner, Paul, and Brian, I am shocked I remermbered all the names!!!! I ain't too clever about routes so Pete, Andy or Brian are the best ones to fill you in there, I know we had fantastic coffee and cake at tulleys farm, and went through East grinstead, it was all on very quiet lanes with a fair bit of climbing, I ended having to put my glasses in my pocket as I could see bugger all out of them due to the mist and them steaming up, Dave a nice bloke I hadn't met before must have the best winter bike I've seen to date, a colnago with full record, impressive! Brian was going very well up the hills, and it was a very enjoyable ride, I finished with 60miles on the clock, ta for great company, great route, and a great ride :-)
