Well, that was fun. The weather looked nasty first thing but I thought that we could always bail if it got worse. Tom's first time down to Charlwood and my first time out on a fixie. Took a direct route down to the cafe up Chipstead Valley, down Pebble Hill (not such a brilliant idea - I couldn't keep up) through Betchworth, Leigh etc. 17 miles from CSS to the cafe. Went the normal club route back and were caught by Cheerful John just before Coulsdon. A quick Espresso and a warm up then back up the hill home. 43 miles door to door which is Tom's longest ride by a fair way. And my bodged together fixie didn't fall apart.

Well, for the first time this year all the B Group was caught by the A Group. Probably just as well - wouldn't want to think that the A Group could never catch the B Group!

Much more organisation in the B Group this week with some T&O kicking in when we were down in the lanes - Steve B amongst those getting the rest of us organised. Faster than either of the two previous weeks (helped by not having a vicious headwind) but clearly not fast enough. Jumped on to the back of the A Group as it went past and hung on to the DC - averaging 20.7 mph but without the heart rate hitting the heady heights of last week.

A tad anti-social this week as I didn't stop at the cafe - went off to put in a few more miles in advance of next weekend (due to hook up with some friends on the Sunday for 90-100 miles) and ended up with 82 on the clock. I'll be back for more in a fortnight.

First time with the A's for a while. Went off at a ferocious pace, I was off the back before the motorway bridge so had to chase like a mad man over the top to get back on. Got a nice draft off a big lorry down the other side which took me past the group but got caught at the lights.

Over the steps was not too bad but then into the lanes and it was feeling a bit hot for me. Managed to just about stick in until about the Rusper rise where the legs fell off, there were a few of us strung out along the road. Re-grouped at the dual carriageway for a good blast to the sprint, I was too far back, but I think that Keith got it.

Quick cuppa and then Chris and I paced it back to East Grinstead after watching Ben arrive at the cafe with a hangover from hell.

Great fun and good to be stretched.

Cheers

Interesting ride - as Joyce said, good weather for punctures.

Even before the 17s with Cap'n Jon got to Reigate, we'd lost son Sam to a puncture... Jon went back to sort him out while the rest of us headed through Reigate to wait for a bit at the common. Going through Reigate I spotted another casualty, Ant, who then rode on to find us at the common and have another go at getting a tube in without the tyre going flat again. As it was cold we split the 17s and sent some faster guys off while the rest of us waited. Ant seemed to have fixed the puncture at last so we started off just as Jon and Sam turned off the A road - we never saw Ant again... Take it you still had problems and called it a day, Ant? Trust the missus came and got you ok!

Passed a couple of others with punctures but we almost made it to Charlwood before Rob punctured - only I noticed as the rest had the bit betweent the teeth for the final sprint. Martin had stopped with Rob so as they said they were ok, I headed to the cafe as I needed to get back home sometime before 3pm today... Forgot, Philf had punctured on a pothole in Lambs Green.

Rather late to the cafe - even the 15s were there before us. Left altogether... for some reason, Jon asked me to take the slower riders... However, this was not required as we all stayed together quite well though we did lose Nina after the climb over the golf course

We also nearly all signed up for Cap'n Jon's alternative ride up Rocky Lane and then up past Fanny's Farm Shop (well done, Marcus* and Phil on their fixies :D even if you did walk the first hill...) and then followed the Chipstead High Road down into Coulsdon for much needed refreshment at the other club cafe... I'd only had a hot chocolate at Charlwood! Nicer route than just blasting down the Awhatsit :D

* of course, this doesn't mean I've forgiven you for your cheeky comment on my dress at the dinner earlier in the ride :x

... and one other thing - thanks to Ant for organising the B Group at CSS and leading us off - now I know why I didn't see him later on.

yeah, an absolute puncturefest - but oddly not all down to the weather; they all seemed to be snake bite pinch punctures. BTW Sam was riding on practically flat tyres - which explains his puncture!

Averaged just over 16 mph to the cafe - I guess we kept losing our rythmn - but given the tailwind a bit pathetic!

As it turned out on the way back the 'faster group' wasn't fast and the 'slower group' wasn't slow!! Still it was more fun riding back together. Yeah, for some reason Gina headed towards Reigate at the roundabout!!  what do they say about women and sense of direction?!!

I suppose it's the climbs that put people off but as you say much nicer and worth a bit of pain! :D

I really enjoyed the ride - an Agreeable experience - a really nice bunch of people - good company. BTW The first timer - Lerwin - did well to stay with us. Thanks everyone and see you next week. :D

Wished I'd have stayed in bed. 3 punctures in the space of 3 miles (all from different objects) so gave up and went over Boxhill then headed for home.Chased down Amys group but gave up when tyre went flat again :|

oh well, every week cant aways be fun. Still got 40 miles into my very tired heavy legs.

It was said as a complement in my own way

Missed the hurricane weather of last week so no riding for two weeks and only 2nd ride in approx. 6-8 weeks. So it was good to get out despite what seemed like a wet day (I have become a woos). It turned out to be good cycling weather, not cold or wet.

Went with Captain's 17 which seemed to be a huge group and not quite 17 as we where quickly caught by JC's 15/16 (to be fear the endless red lights did have a say in this). struggled on the steps but felt the fixie handled everything else without issue.

Then the punctures started so we had a lot of start stops as we Agreeably waited in most instances whilst they were mended.

The speed wasn't exactly 17's as we where caught by JC and the 15/16's again. Then as Amy said the group spilt with Tom leading a group having dropped back from the 19's following an altercation with Kate, the remainder of the group waiting for the Cams and Martin.

On the way back at Merstham we turned down Rocky lane as already mentioned. What a great route. Can't see me wanting to take the standard Merstham drag too often from now on.

22nd January will now been known as puncture day.

Unlucky !

On time  and It was my first time with the B's this week, it was scrambley at the beginning and we weren't working as a team, but as we got into the lanes the group got organized and we picked up some good speed. overall I enjoyed the good workout and had fun on the carriageway when only the four of us were working hard as the A group (that let us go first) were chasing behind us, we managed to keep the gap (with a red light stop) and got first to the Cafe :D, good work Lee and the other two guys that were with us !

We didn't catch you because Rob W's fantastic powertap kept jumping off his bike into the road which meant we had to stop for him to go back and pick up the pieces before heading off again. Rob, does it still work?

Cheers
