A good ride today despite the weather . They say this kind of weather is character building for training but quite honestly I would happily have jumped on a bus rather than cycle back from the cafe. Still ,it didn't take too long to warm up.
Did anybody get a comment from spouses about smelling of horse sh1t ? Mrs S said I had the smell of somebody who had crawled into a horses backside . I'm assuming this is something to do with the spray on the roads rather than a natural aroma I give off but if it is feel free to pull me up on this so I can deal with it.

These days my wife doesn't get anywhere close enough to smell me. :(

Funny though I did smell a faint horse poo aroma when we were at CSS.

Well, that was WETand COLD.

A day for the uber-hard. 8)

Must have been at least 30 of us in the end - which given the ugly weather was a great turn out. mind you I was the first one there and there was a moment where i thought 'am I the only one sad, mad and stupid enough to come out in this?!' fortunately there are others as equally sad, mad and stupid - we are not alone. :D

I rode with the 18 mph - the two Brians (which sounds like a 70s punk band), Noel, PeteM, and Andy. We were joined by Del (who was doing a solo ride to get some fitness back) for about 30 seconds before he dropped off and Paul (a casualty from TG B) who pulled the whole thing along for much of the time. :D

Andy punctured twice!!! But, quick changes by Andy meant it didn't hold things up too much. We lost a bit of momentum but otherwised it was a great ride - good company as usual - everyone doing their bit. We rode beautifully through Reigate BTW.

I arrived at the Pine Coffin absolutely covered in mud - and I mean covered - thanks to riding for about five minutes in the wheel of PeteM's new Colnago machine. It's an extraordinary experience which I would recommend to no one - the bike has an amazing ability to funnel and throw out stuff at you - rather, I'd imagine - though I've never actually done it - what it must be like riding behind an industrial muck spreader. Be warned - if Pete is in your group keep away from his rear end!

To be honest, even in just shorts & T-shirt, I was a bit too warm on the rollers in the kitchen this morning.

Its all about consistency Lee and those who didnt turn up will pay the price.

A small TG today and not the fastest with some no shows and Matt saving himself for tomorrow.

Lee did well to keep up and will expect to see him as a regular in the TGA soon.

It would have been very easy to find an excuse not to turn up at CSS this morning. Cold, tooth removed, hair to wash, you get the picture.but the cold wet weather didn't dampen the enjoyment of just riding.

7 of us set of with Tim for a 16, but we soon list Lucy with cleat problems, have a good race tomorrow Lucy.

The other six made a problem free ride to the pine to find no queue and lots off cake. I did win the sprint Phil but as this was against myself probably doesn't count.

7 of us had a easy ride to and up box hill having what would usually be a scenic route through Walton which was anything but today.

80 k's when I got home and sat in the shower with my kit for a good 10 mins.

Soooooo glad I was there

Felt like a horse being shod at CSS this morning, but unfortunately this horse didn't make it out the box :? Hadn't managed to get my shoe clipped it on the way down the hill. Was I wearing one mtb shoe, or was it my over shoes? No, must be cleat PMT (it happens!)

After lots of pushing, twisting, adjusting and standing on one leg with foot in air . . . it wasn't happening for me today! Thanks guys for trying to get me clipped in. Too cold and fed up to contemplate one legged hill, pick up arranged and shoes thrown in the corner in disgust!

[quote]have a good race tomorrow Lucy
- Thanks Marcus :D

I don't usually fail at bike related mechanical things, but I must admit Lucy's cleat had us beat this morning, even after attempted ajdustment it just wouldn't click.

By this time we were all a bit cold and damp, so UI was extremely glad I had my Altura waterproof on rather than just the rain cape thingy I always carry in the second bottlecage, and the overshoes, oh and the waterproof helmet cover! Shame I'd left the new Altura waterproof gloves I bought from Evans yesterday, in my office.

By the time we got to the top of Box Hill on the way back, my hands were so cold and wet that I couldn't operate the front changer! This meant I was right off the back of Brian, Peter, Andy, Gina, Phil and Marcus by the time we reached the hump mid-way down Chipstead Vally Road. I caught Peter at the temporary TLs in Coulsdon so we popped in Nonna Rosas for Latte before heading home.

I washed the bike down before putting the dirtiest kit I can remember into the washing machine and having a nice hot bath. Shame Crawley Town succombed to Man Utd.

See you next week...

I feel as if I was riding on a different day, I was even thinking how lucky we were that it wasn't really raining just misty. But this is the MTB ride though and sometimes in the rain it's just better to stay away from the cars, road spray and with no advantage to drafting you don't get rained on from the guy in front's wheel.

There was only Colin and myself so we thought to see how long it would take to loop back to Croydon via the Norht Downs Way. The aim was to get to Croydon for 12 so we skipped the usual Happy Valley section, instead taking the tarmac to the top of Farthing Downs and joining the NDW from there. After an hour we'd mde it to the turn-off above Warlingham Girls School, there was a bit of splashing and skiding along the way but all still pleasant. By coincidence, we met Mark McL there who was out for a quick spin. From there we picked our way back to Croydon via some of the Sunday MTB trails getting to East Croydon train station just after 12.
