Sunday 17th long ride to the coast

Postby Serge » Wed Apr 13, 2011 6:59 pm

I plan on riding down to Brighton via Arundel, worthing etc on Sunday morning. Possibly ride back from brighton or train back depending on the legs :) . Plenty of bail out options as we follow the A29 for most of the route so plenty of train stations to get you home if need be  . The route is on the main roads but theseare mostly quite. I will be starting from Broadbridge heath at about 930am after marshalling at the SCCU 25. There may be a few others riding out from Croydon to meet me so there should not be a 1.5 hour slog on your own to meet me. I plan on about 5 hours total including out to the TT and about 120-140km. This will be a steady 19mph pace or 200 watts average for you power users. If there are any takers post up or PM.

Great ride out to the coast yesterday, day started a bit grey but by the time Iliya and I got to Slinfold the arms warmers and Gilets were being ditched. We were working well and making very good progress. The first and only real climb was past Bury on the A29 and over to Arundel, its on the main drag A29 which is usually reasonably quite however there was a classic car run/rally of sorts so a few more cars than I expected but it was cool to see E types, hillman imps, frogeye sprites etc out and about in the sunshine, No old bangers thay all appeared to be restored and loved :D . Once over the hill it was into Arundel and a quick scoot around the picturesque town and castle to show Iliya as he had not seen it before.
Just out of Arundel and there is another climb onto the A27. This proved to be alot more "rolling" than I rembember  . To be honest I need to revise the route to skop that section as the traffic is fast and it stretches a good 10km before peeling off into Worthing. *note to self check route  .
Quick refuel in Worthing overlooking the sea. Iliya was suffering with our shared fast pace early on. Once onto the coastal road through Shoreham and Hove the wheels fell off for Iliya so to speak. He had Bonked in a big way, not a nice place to be at all having done it myself a few time on this route. A short tow into Brighton to ease his suffering and a bite to eat whilst on the train home and he was as right as rain. He even mentioned hopping off at Gatwick and riding back from there ! I didnt fancy that so said we can save that for another day  . So back to East Croydon and we went our seperate ways, Great ride and good company. 120Km. 3 hours 50 minutes. 840 metre ascent. 19.5mph average. 208 watts average, 238 normalized. Really sore legs now

Despite bonking towards the end, it was a really good ride. We went through some nicely surfaced roads and there were a few good descents - following on from some tough climbs. If A27 can be avoided this will probably be my favourite route to Brighton.

Here is the link with mapped route if anyone is interested:

Serge, thanks for organising the ride, being a tourist guide and for the tow along the coast.

:)
