Royal Wedding Avoidance - Road Version

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

Royal Wedding Avoidance - Road Version

Snoop has an MTB ride set up for Friday, which will be a great way to avoid all the obsession with things royal and matrimonial!

So for those us without MTBs or addicted to the thrill of the Queen's highway (I think she's keeping it open next Friday?), I'm thinking of a road alternative to escape the wall-to-wall coverage of Kate's dress.

Meet at CSS for a 9:30 departure, then heading out via Chaldon, Caterham, Woldingham, Godstone, Lingfield, Dormansland, Holtye, Hartfield, Ashdown, Groombridge and cafe stop at Penshurst.

Return home via Mark Beech, Hever, Edenbridge, Haxted, Blindley Heath, Tilburstow, Bletchingley and Merstham.

If there is sufficient demand, then we can pause for additional forelock-tugging stops, or to watch the ceremony on my iPhone.

We should aim to be back mid afternoon, but I've just checked the TV schedules and there's recorded highlights at 20:30 until 22:00, so bring your lights and we can ride round in circles all day if we need to!

I was thinking of riding to Wiston on Friday, otherwise I'm happy to tag along on this one and leave Wiston for another day - I do like the lanes south of Horsham - quiet, pretty...

My first (and so far only) thought on the announcement was "Oh good, the roads will be quiet." So I'm in :) .

Always rather fancied trying Kidds Hill / The Wall. Are you planning to go anywhere near?

I thought about it, but then thought.......... no. I'll just try and enjoy myself on the day. :)

I was going to take the left turn out of Hartfield, which is quite a climb in itself. But, if there is a general demand for pain, then I suppose we could swing out and take a detour via The Wall - or split into 2 groups and rejoin at the top.

Mind you, if there is a royal thunderstorm going on over Ashdown, any enthusiasm for hanging around is likely to be short lived.

Kidds Hill/The Wall is next on my list of the 100 greatest cycling climbs. 9 done, 91 to go.

I've done it a couple of times. Not too bad - fairly constant gradient so just keep the pedals moving. Cob Lane near Ardingly is nastier IMO.

Hi Del, I would quite like to join you. I went in the 17mph group on Sat and then tagged along with a few of the faster guys over box hill and back to Croydon. Can you give me an aprox idea of the distance and speed - I don't want to slow anyone down! Cheers, Greg :-)

No need to worry Greg.

We will wait at the top of hills to regroup. If you were ok in the 17s you'll be ok with us on Friday.

That's a fair description of Kidds Hill. Rather looks like there's a bit of demand to go up the bloody thing on Friday! Still be positive. It's less painful than listening to Huw Edwards describing Kate's train!

Thankfully, we're too far to the East to be thinking of going up Cob Lane!! :P
