Club Run June 4th

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

Keira Carole and I managed an 8 mile round trip from our place to Banstead and back. This was Keira's longest ride to date and it was mostly trails. She did well managing a steady climb that goes on for just over 2 miles. Lovely sunny day and we had an open air lunch in the new café in the park just off Banstead High Street.

What did you lot get up to then?

Alternative ride to Hever Castle led by Pete, 9 of us in total. Stopped at cafe at 4 Elms which was nice but we sat about too long so we were running late.
3,427ft of climbing and lovely weather and fun in the disagreeables 8)

I made a rare appearance on the clubrun and went out with a well-disciplined 19's group which picked up a few TG dropees on the way. Didn't think much of the resurfacing "improvements" on the approach to Charlwood - it was like riding through a gravel trap at some points. Set off back with a mixture of TG/19's once we'd admired The Shadow's retro bike for a sufficient length of time. An old bike didn't slow Steve down much and the pace increased as he and Peachey put the hammer down. After a re-group at the church we set off for the col de Merstham where I got caught out behind as someone let a gap open. I damn near killed myself trying to bridge across but didn't quite get there, and frustratingly had the lead group in sight all the way to Coulsdon. Pretty good ride all in all.

A rare club run report from myself. A very small TG left CSS,five of us I think, including Darren, Ant, Rob and Illya. Steady pace towards Redhill with some concerted efforts from all. I think we got a bit lazy through Reigate, hampered by traffic and lights, so that Ben Dangerous and another rider(sorry no name?) shot past in the town centre. Through the Saturday Reigate mayhem and we were quickley together rolling TNO from then on in. The pace took its toll on a few, untill we were down to 4 at the Parkgate turn. We continued setting a good pace until Rusper step were it got a bit more heated.

Darren felt he had the legs and moved away from the off. I don't think we all thought it was an attack, he moved off smoothly and no-one reacted. I think when he realised he had a gap he put them hammer down. Ant put in a monster of a chase, and frustratingly the gap closed but then steadied. Hard chasing. When I came to the front I felt like I came to a standstill. Hats of to Ant again as he made a go of it again slowly bridging back to Darren and passing him too just before the crest. All four of us were alone, albeit only a few metres between us. Over the top into Rupser and were all together and on to the DC, but not before Darren feels like his legs are good and ups the pace past Lambs green. I'm in his wheel and hold off countless attacks to break free and soon were out in front. Mostly strighforward steady TNO on the DC, except for myself nearly getting dropped spinning my legs of going down hill after the lights  time for a rangy-er cassette! No sprint either due to poor surface but not before Darren (again) broke away and I buried myself to bring it back,I think Rob went over first but its all accedemic!

On the ride back a steady ride with a mix of riders, Had a nice tow for some of the way from Jon H; a familiar sight looking at the back of his saddle from Majorca a couple of years back! Cheers Jon. All in all a great workout and superb weather on a fine day of riding.

Paul
PS. Steve your 'new' bike looks superb in all its glory. Stunning.

Thanks Paul and Jon, glad you liked it.
It was my first ride on the completed bike (I had been on a short 20min ride with no bar tape to check all was fine and bolts tight), so I wanted to be careful with it and not push it too hard, after all it is 50 years old.
But almost straight away, the confidence was there, and it rode beautifully. It was lovely :D . All the hours and hours of hard work were paid back there and then. I will ride it very occasionally, maybe 3 or 4 times a year, but only on sunny dry days. I can't bare to think of it getting wet .I'll get some photos put somewhere if anyone is interested.
