Club Run Sunday 2nd October

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

Club Run Sunday 2nd October

Since the forecast is a good one for the whole weekend, we thought it might be nice to go and visit some of the nice lanes off towards Leith and Holmbury. The idea is to ride out from CSS at the usual 9:30 and do the CTC Hilly 50 route with a modification to get a cafe stop in.

Yes, it is hilly but with some fantastic scenery. There are no climbs that Tom can't get up.

Normal Sunday CR rules apply - 16s upwards, regroup at the top of climbs. It's a little longer than Del's normal rides - around 55 miles total.

Hi Phil

A new bloke will be joining you - I emailed Del as I didn't realise you were leading the ride. His name's Tony.

Cheers

I shall be joining Phil on Sunday.

Phil suggested the route to me as he wants to get hills in before riding the Etape de Cymru.

It will basically be the CTC 50 kms route, which starts from Box Hill, but with the ride out and back from CSS tacked on.

We're going to vary the route slightly to pick up the cafe at Abinger, so that people can grab a drink and refuel.

Phil will be leading, so I can just coast along behind him! :-)

Weather is looking good, so hope to see you all at CSS at 9:30.

PS - Jon - I got the email and will reply to Tony.

Jon,

I just checked the mail. "Tony's" name is actually Martin!

Do you forget all your pupils names as well?

Must be fun when you run through the morning register (assuming such things still exist!).

You had 7 on your ride, jnr - we had 8!

Good ride - didn't do the full Hilly 50 route but I think we did quite enough hills as it was  We decided to cut it short (by a little bit... ) and took the road to Peaslake where we rubbed shoulders with locals and mtb'ers for tea and grub before picking up the Hilly 50 route at Hoe Lane to the final few climbs of the day including White Down and Box Hill 8)

All told I did 60 miles and my computer said my average was 13.7. Have to say that I'm definitely getting something back this time as I would've been a lot slower

Just one interesting moment on the way back home  Mini-roundabout and my right of way but there's a car coming up fast from the left which shoots onto the RAB just in front of me - not entirely unexpected but then the driver, a greyhaired older lady, realises she's just cut me up and stops right in front of me so that I have to slam the brakes on to stop going into the rear side door.... It was nice of her to stop - just would've been better at the give way line  Not quite as buttock-clenching as yesterday's close shave (literally) with another old dear in a car - the sort where you could open the passenger door and get in, if they weren't doing 40 mph...

Anyway, I'm knackered and it's one of those days when I wish I had a bath to soak in  Mind you, I wasn't expecting to get a suntan line from my shorts on 2nd October!

Are we sure he isn't actually Tony Martin? Strong rider.

We had to cut a bit off because someone kept getting mechanicals because they are clearly rubbish at bike maintenance. Still, we had sun, slopes and sweat.

That tarmac on the A25 is lovely. Shame about the traffic.

Brilliant ride today in fantastic weather and the usual great company. Great suggestion for the route from Phil, who led us around and did indeed consume a fruit pie of some description at the Peaslake cafe.

We missed out Ewhurst and Pitch Hill, but that meant we got to do the full length of Holmbury Hill instead, which I always enjoy.

And a big plus for me is that I got my first Peaslake cheese straw of the year, even though Dan warned me it would turn me into a mountain biker. :D Last time I was there, Iliya grabbed the last one........... I've never forgiven him! :)

It's been a superb weekend all round for riding the bike. 19.6 mph in the 19s yesterday and 63 miles of Surrey Hills in unbelievably sunny and warm weather today. A wonderful weekend! 8)

It has been a good weekend Del. And I was pleased to show those who don't know the very worst road surfaces that Surrey has to offer.

Etape Cymru on Sunday and the forecast is ... traditional Welsh. So the option is, ride up mountains in the rain or hang out with the inlaws for the day. Ah - here's my waterproof and big cassette.
