Women's Winter Race Training

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Women's Winter Race Training

Postby Michelle » Tue Sep 02, 2008 9:28 pm

Hi everyone,

got an email from John Leitch today, who is a coach linked with Surrey League. Over the winter he does Power Pack and Starter Pack training. Also he does specific women's race training.

I took part in some of these training sessions last winter and they were good. They are especially useful if you don't have other halves or racing friends to ask how to race or what to do.

Why not have a go? Everyone is really friendly and you can pick up some good skills and knowledge.

Training and coaching sessions at Hillingdon cycle circuit for women riders:

* who currently race (all categories of licence)

* who plan to race next year (and know they now need to train well)

* who planned to race this summer just gone (but somehow missed out
making a start)

* who compete in triathlons (and want to improve their cycling skills)

* juniors

and

* youth (U16 and U14)

session 1 - Sunday 23 November 2008

session 2 – Sunday 7 December 2008

Hillingdon is a car-free circuit, so there is no problem with on-coming traffic. It is tarmaced and is about 0.9 of a mile round.

The Hillingdon circuit loop includes a straight (often into a headwind), a mild drag (that goes on) and a short fast descent followed by a tight corner (one that you can pedal round and get an advantage over riders who lack the nerve to push forward and who opt to freewheel instead).

This is continuation of the seven sessions run over the past two winters by Surrey Cycle Racing League/Power Pack.

They all had a common purpose of looking to get you fit and ready for racing with a combination of group riding and exercises containing elements of “flat out” effort.

For the first event……the three hours will be a combination of:

warm-up
laps with sprints (so comparable to a points race)
three-lap race
through-and-off groups
30-min break
skills
two short races, each with different format
through-and-off

timetable: assemble at 11.00am onwards
on the track 11.30am
break 1pm – 1.30pm
finish 3pm

So hopefully out there for a total of 3 hours, though possibly trimmed back in the case of particularly bad weather.

Price: £10 each session (or £18 for both) Places: 30

There is a mid-session break, so please bring your own packed lunch.

If you’ve not been to Hillingdon for a while, then the news is that the adjoining site has been developed by Goals, the operator who runs five-a-side football on mini-pitches all wrapped up within high netting fences.

Cyclists can share in the Goals facilities which include changing rooms, toilets, showers and drinks…including strong alcohol (should you wish to go on a blinder).

The floors are slippery. You are advised to remove cycling shoes.

and there in the white space is the cycle circuit.... look on the map again for the big green letters saying A312...and that empty area space is where you want to be... the access to it is down the white-coloured road over to the right-hand side.

it's called Springfield Road and
