Hill Climbs - Where and what ya doin'?

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Hill Climbs - Where and what ya doin'?

Postby Andrew G » Fri Sep 19, 2008 4:24 pm

I was always going to do the Bec but a couple of pints at lunchtime and I've decided to make a weekend of it. Just a bit of end of season fun as far as I'm concerned, and I can't climb very well, so anyone else with a problem fighting gravity care to join me at the following:

Saturday 11th October
Brighton Mitre - 11am - GH/92 - ?
Brighton Mitre - 2.30pm - GH/94 - ?

Sunday 12th October
Catford CC - 11am - GH/32 - York Hill(Goathurst Common)
Bec CC - 2pm - GH/31 - White Lane(Titsey)

Go on you know you want to, what could be more fun than going as hard as you can up a steep hill until you spit your lungs on to the handlebars, fall off your bike, and throw up on a grass verge :D .

Can someone (Tony or Jon I suspect) help out with locations for the Brighton ones please. What are the hills like - short/long/near vertical/stepped/ramping up towards the top?

Cheers,

Andrew.

The morning Brighton Mitre hill starts in Steyning, just off the main road through the village (not the A283, but the road that comes off there at the Bramber castle roundabout). It then heads SW on a minor road up towards Steying Bowl. It's longer than the Bec or Catford hills, not as steep and more open - very nice views from the top. There are a couple of sections of about 1 in 6 midway, and it eases off towards the top.

The afternoon one is much longer - about 3 miles I think. It goes up Mill Hill from Shoreham. It starts just east of the A27/A283 junction, and you actually climb quite a bit from Shoreham to the start, which is north of the A27. It's not very steep - maybe 1 in 10 at the steepest point - and actually has a couple of downhill bits, one into a sweeping lefthand blind bend, and one into a tight 90 degree right. So it's worth riding up before you do it to check out the lines through those. Quite a few people actually rode on TT bikes last year.

I'm otherwise engaged this year - London South DC AGM on the Saturday, and Ibbo Cake Quest on the Sunday, but I reckon I might be finished in time to spectate at the Bec.

Hi Doug,

I would have shown you how badly I climb but I'm away on the date of the Wigmore unfortunately, perhaps next year after Tony's great review (but then he's a class grimpeur). I can't climb for toffee but the atmosphere at hill climbs is fantastic so I'm going to put up with the pain for the ego stroking :D . Always a nice sociable hour for a TT too :) .

I would but I want to ride it solo (having only done it in a monsoon before), would it be too stupid to ride it twice?

I am planning on doing the Bec. Does anyone think I should ride fixed (bearing in mind 44x22 is the lowest I can go without additional financial outlay)?

Then again, I could put myself forward for tandem selection ....

I'd like to ride them fixed but in a similar position (44x20 my lowest possible) and there is no way I could get up them on that kind of gear. When I did the Bec a couple of years ago I used 39x21/23/26 on the climb - not sure that I should have used the 26 but I eased up a bit before getting to the crowds so I didn't look too knackered when I got there  .

Oh well entries are in the post now. No-one going to join me on any of the non-Bec ones, and I thought there were a load of climbers in the club.

No Snoop £6.50, it's only £13 for tandems, i.e. £6.50 per person.

700 yards Sean, so on price per mile you could say hill climbs are more expensive than other TTs (still need the same level of organisation and overheads though). It does have a much higher prize pot though, along with the Catford HC the richest events in the World I think per yard or metre (depending whether you are metric or not :D ).

If it is VFM you are after then you need to enter a few 100 mile TTs next year Sean as they are still only £7, and the 12hr was only £15 - bargain :P .

Adam - I don't know the Bec prize pot yet but it has been similar to the Catford the last few years, which is...
[quote="Catford HC organiser"]Come and compete in the oldest hill climb in the world – Over £1100 in prizes.

First run in 1887, the modern version has been held on Yorks Hill near Sevenoaks, Kent since 1939 and the event record of 1min. 47.6 secs was set by Phil Mason (San Fairy Ann CC) in 1983.

Last year’s event was won by Dan Fleeman (Blue Sky Cycles.) in 1min 48.2 secs.

The Catford event is one of the events which form the week-end’s ‘4 Hill Climb’s Competion’. The winner of the £100 prize in 2007 was Chris Mcnamara of Wildside R.T.

As its 25years since Phil Mason broke the record for the San Fairy Ann Cycling Club we would like to thank them for their kind donation of £250.00. The winner could walk away with a prize in excess of £650.00

Prizes 1st to 6th. We would like to thank `Rapha`for their generous donation of quality cycling clothing - Prize for fastest - Woman; Veteran; Junior; Mountain Biker; and a `Lantern Rouge` prize of £10. £60 Team prize donated by `Vaz Cycle Finishers`

BTW if you want to win the Bec HC you'll need to get up White Lane in less than 1 minute 50 seconds (and that won't guarantee top spot).

Sylv - Catford one on your singlespeed for the MTB prize?

If you can climb steep hills very quickly then money can be made on hill climbs as they have had really generous prize pots lately. The Wigmore one Doug is promoting in Kent has £600 of prizes on offer too. They do get seriously fast climbers though so you have to beat the likes of Dan Fleeman and Jody Crawforth.
