Hillingdon 4.07.06 ACC Team

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Well we had 3 agreeables at Hillingdon tonight Ajay, Matt Ives and myself, Ajay and I thought we were a twosome but bumped into Matt on the start line. Matt and I were first timers here and I believe Matt popped his racing cherry tonight.

All the talk on the ride up from Victoria we3 were talking about strategies and how we would work as a team, Ajay offered to be my lead out man on the sprint, we would get organised and take everyone by storm.

The pace was pretty mild all through just in the peloton spinning away with none of the dark hidden surprises that Palace can offer.
The first 10 laps Ajay and I were sticking up in the front third of the group away from any harm. A few breakaways went off the front but they were soon reeled in alap or so later, Ajay and I broke loose and attacked the field we got a few bike lengths a couple of others joined in and we worked together quite well but were wound in.

Feeling the pace was far too comfortable I attacked up the start drag was joined by Matt and Ajay, after a while we got reeled in, but felt the effort was well worth it for interests sake, and showing the group that Addiscombe were in da house!!

The race seemed to go on for ages with lots more active riding at the front by us lot.
Two laps to go Matt nestled up front into the top 3, I got a few places behind him, the pace really hotted up and the last lap seemed twice as fast as the rest.

Rounding the corner before the last drag the sprinters went very early I realised I was a little too far back, with my lead out man Ajay nowhere in sight I was on my own!

Sprinting up the hill I felt really good came past Matt but just left it too late to compete with the bunch sprint. I will remember to be in the first 5 next time at the start of the drag.

At the finish we discovered a Tele Tubbie kid had broke away on lap 2 whilst the pace was slow and lapped everyone and stole the victory,
Great race, great cooling ride back through South London.

Come on and give racing ago, the pace at Hillingdon is not too hot and most of the faster 17s at the CR would easily cope.

Cheers George

Got to Hillingdon for my first RR and met Ajay and George on the line. Ajay whispered into my ear the 'tactics' for the day and gave me a knowing look. Bemusedly, I nodded in agreement, even though I didn't have a clue about what he was going on about!
Anyway, it was just nice to be part of 'the team'.

I was expecting to get my butt kicked from here to Kingdom come, but the pace was...well.. quite manageable. Just want to echo what George said really. Most of the 17's club run group could race here easily and certainly all of the 18/19's.

Ajay and big George went in an early break as I languished at the back taking in the 30C air. I thought about trying to join them but then thought how unpopular I would be if I dragged the bunch up to them.

George was riding in the front 5 for most of the first half of the race and Ajay was up with him. One confounding thing for me was that I would realise that I was at the back and make an effort to get to the front. Then when I got there, within about half a lap I would magically be at the back again!! Not entirely sure how that happens, but I wasted so much energy doing that a few times in the race.

Anyway, at about half way Ajay and George had another dig at the front and I thought I'd join them. The three of us got a bit of a gap but the bunch steamrollered us after about half a lap.

Soon after that Ajay had a 'psychological' puncture which forced him out for a lap. I learned later that a psychological puncture is a medical condition that affects less than 1% of the population and has the effect of making one think that one has had a puncture and forces one to take a lap out. However, I'm sure on that lap out I saw Ajay sitting on the verge with a Stella in his hand and his feet up...but it might have been the sun getting to me, which was still pretty hot.

lap after lap went by. I had a little go up the hill and stayed out for half a lap but no one was coming up to me and I didn't have the legs to stay away, so I sat up.

Last lap was slowish, I thought, until the last corner when the sprint started. Got boxed in a bit , not that this really made any difference since in the next 5 seconds I realised that I really have no aptitude for sprinting whatsoever. George pushing some inhuman gear went past me like I was going backwards and I managed to crawl over the line.

Back to the club house afterwards for lashings of tea and cake in the late evening sunshine lamenting what could have been. Ajay pointed out the guy that won the 4th cat race by lapping the field. He looked about 10 years old, with glasses on and was about 2 stone overweight and really did look like a Tele Tubbie!!

The three of us took a brisk ride home back to sarf London behind the human motorbike that is George.
All in all, a great evening out. Thanks guys!

Cheers,
Matthew

"Super", I think I will make it next week if you want to meet at Victoria station.

Not too familiar with them Teletubbies, but I assume they are as harmless as their French cousin Casimir

Thats great Sylvain ! Matt and George are both fearless and great company to ride with - as long as you can get George to take off his cycle rack !

Looks like I'm running the third cat feeder group for DS Toks ! 8)
