The first of this year's club time trials is on Tuesday 11th May, 7.45pm start, on the Holmwood course.

Any of the experienced riders got any tips for novices like myself? For instance:
- Is it better to ride to speed, average speed, HRM, or how you feel?
- Is there a good place to warm up beforehand?
- Anything we should know about the course - e.g. inclines
- I plan to ride on my normal bike with no tri-bars and my 25mm Gatorskins. Is there anything that could give a cheap advantage - e.g. altering position. I thought of covering my helmet with cling-film (but that's the sort of thing I think about at weekends).

I wasn't going to spend to much money or effort on improvements for two reasons: 1) because I might hate it and 2) because if I don't hate it, it will make it much easier to improve my time.

Go off flat out from the start
Push yourself till you puke
warm up in the car with the heating on
the course is so hilly it makes Bletchingly look like a billiard table
if you want a cheap advantage go for the Campagnolo Ghibli disc wheel
remove your helmet and wear a balaclava, it looks fast well maybe not as fast as that silly yellow beak someone in the club wears :lol:

A balaclava would be OK, but I was considering a gimp mask - although it might interfere with breathing

1 & 3) Go on feel to start out, don't worry about giving yourself something else to think about. The course is a straight out and back affair with a roundabout in the middle that you go straight over (2nd exit staying on the DC) turning at the second roundabout that's at almost exactly 5 miles. The course is not flat but not hilly. There is the odd drag on it - on the out leg there is one shortly after the start and then nothing of note just very slight rises and dips. on the way back there are a couple which will get you changing down the gears but the whole course is big ring and it's a flying finish shortly after the second drag on the way back.

It is a course that gets easier on the second and third races as you get to know it and how to ride the drags. 10 miles isn't very far but too far to go full bore all the way, however you should be not too far off it. Try and ride an even race as it's quicker than going up and down with bursts of flat out and recovery. On the drags try and ride them smoothly at a constant effort and keep the power down as you crest them to smoothly roll over the brow and start picking up the speed again. A common mistake for newbies is to go too hard on the drags, out the saddle honking, and then go in to the red which takes time to recover from on the flat afterwards. That doesn't mean you go easy up them but don't hang your lungs over the handlebars either. You get better at judging pace and effort with the more you ride but you should be absolutely knackered when you cross the line having given it your all, it's a short effort so you recover quickly but I was told you shouldn't be able to ride another half mile at the effort you just rode the previous 10 in or you weren't going hard enough - old timers don't sugar coat it :) .

2) There's a little loop which goes anti-clockwise down the road we start on (Spook Hill) away from the start, left at the RAB and up the bottom bit of A24, first left at the other end of Spook Hill which will be where you start from. I tend to just do laps of this varying gears and effort to loosen up and warm up, if you want to do a longer one somewhere else then you can go for a spin in the lanes down the road from where we park - we park in the car park on Inholms Lane, from Spook Hill turn left just past the shops(r)/pond(l) and go up the hill passed the church, the car park is at the top on the right at the 90degree left hander.

4) Go with what you ride normally and what you like to start with, don't change anything. If you like it then you can always add clip-on tri-bars later which may mean changing your saddle position but always best to ride standard to start with to find out if you want to spend the money and also you'll give yourself constant markers to ride against without keep changing things. Obviously don't ride it like a CR though it's a race and you should be going hard and hurting yourself. When I rode TTs on my road bike if I wasn't on the drops then I'd have my hands over the hoods with my forearms laying flat back along the top of the bars and staying low.

a seasoned veteran once gave me these three golden rules of time trialling. I've never looked back:

Rule 1. Don't go off too fast
Rule 2. Don't go off too fast
Rule 3. Don't go off too fast
