Women's Race @ Goodwood on Sunday

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Women's Race @ Goodwood on Sunday

Postby Maria David » Wed May 04, 2011 12:24 pm

Hi,

Just to let the ladies know that the women's race at Goodwood this Sunday is a London Women's League race and is SUITABLE FOR NEW RACERS.

It is for 3rd and 4th category women.

Also, there will be a trophy up for grabs for the highest placed 3rd or 4th cat rider. The trophy will go to 3rd and 4th cats who have NOT PREVIOUSLY BEEN ELITE, 1ST OR 2ND CATS!

There will also be cash prizes for the TOP 3 FINISHERS, A LAP PRIME AND LANTERNE ROUGE.

And of course there will be the usual BC and Surrey League points (if you you are member) on offer as well.

More info about this race and the women's league is on the website www.londonwomenscycleracing.com

Cheers,

Maria

There are women in Addiscombe - at least there were the last time I looked!

Some of them are quite strong as they turn up at time trials and don't do shabby times at all. This event at Goodwood is specifically aimed at new riders. Lack of experience is not a reason as to why there would not be any Addiscombe women at this race.

The club has kindly affiliated to the league so that women can show off their prowess on a more level playing field at local level - it's up to Addiscombe CC women to step out!

Hi Maria,

Thanks for this, and for your unending enthusiasm for organising women's racing :)

Unfortunately I am not very fit (as ever!) having had some injury & illness over the winter, so not planning to try racing this year. Also, I have the May Flyer that day which, now I come to think of it, will probably be harder than a race at goodwood, where at least it's flat!

It's true that there are quite a few women in ACC now, but they don't seem to be interested in road racing. I could be wrong, as there are always new people, but it seems they are mainly interested in triathlons or just riding for fun, not racing. Those few who are interested, are leaving to join other teams or clubs, and I can hardly blame them as it's no fun going to a race on your own, especially as a novice.

If there are any ACC women reading this who are interested in racing, I can highly recommend the 3/4 cat races at Goodwood as a starter - you will be well looked after. I'll be out on Saturday if anyone wants to chat about it. Can people get a day licence though Maria?

Would be very interested to talk about how you have managed to build up interest for racing amongst women in Dulwich Paragon, as it doesn't seem to be happening in Addiscombe. Perhaps it just needs someone with your passion to drive it - you could come back ;-)

Totally agree Bridget! As woman rep on committee I tried to find out what women wanted from the club and got back comments about kit!!! I am willing to organise stuff but only if the demand is there! Am interested in racing myself but have only just made a comeback due to the issues surrounding Florrie so this is a little too soon!!!

Hey Carole,
You out tomorrow? Be good to see you. Hope Florrie is better now.

Have had another think about it today, and may try to do 2 or 3 races this year if there are some other 3/4 ones at Goodwood, or some other easier races. I'll look at the calendar and let you know, and if you're up for it come along. I certainly won't be doing anything amazing but will be good to give it a go. :)

Nice one Carol, I think the women are right about the kit. Its been around for nearly 8 years now and it's definitley due an update. A new kit for Olympic Year 2012 that's what I say 8)... Maybe a women's only training/race group should be promoted on Saturdays. It only needs a group of 4/5 of you to do a friendly-fast rotation most of the way to the cafe. Or you could do it in fifteen minute chunks where you ride moderately hard then ease off again. Don't wait for us blokes to get it started, you and Bridget could definitely do it by yourselves wink: Re getting fit for racing, I'd say six-eight weeks of training featuring one or two proper fast rides every week and you'll be ready to 'race' at lower cat level by early-mid July. Simples :D :D
