Club 10, 22 May 2012, CANCELLED

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Now the bad news. As of Saturday morning there were roadworks on the course, so unless those disappear by Tuesday it's unlikely we would be able to use the course. Second bit of bad news is I've got an arm in plaster so can't drive so will probably not be there.

Hi Jon H

Bloody typical. Lovely weather predicted and a full field. How will we know whether it's on or not?

Not seen them so can't comment on that but with TTs I believe there's a rule/reg on how long a carriageway can be reduced to single from double due to the reduction in overtaking on busier roads. Hopefully this will be okay as it is a bit of road that doesn't have a high traffic count.

The CTT guidance note says that a course shouldn't be used if the DC is reduced to SC for more than 200m.

When will the decision be made about the race? Is it a case of waiting and seeing tomorrow when we turn up?

Looking on the Surrey CC website, I found this which is suitably unhelpful. It implies that work could go on until 18th June.

I will take a spin around there after dropping the boy at drumming tonight. See what the scale is.

If the blue dot on the map is correct then they're by Beare Green RAB which may mean they're only small, also if they have been going on since 8th May then they were there for the last Club 10. I seem to remember one or two riders mentioning a very small bit of roadworks.

Depends on whether they're just spending a long time in the same small hole or shuffling about and digging new ones.

It looks like this link refers to the road works that were on the course at the last evening 10? It there another set of road works, because this one wasn't much of a problem??

Same question from me as I need to organise a baby sitter ....

I'm assuming that it's the same works but they're moving (like the damned irritating one between Banstead and Purley). Last time it was maybe 50 yards. If I get a chance to check tonight I will.

Lucy - can't Jamie sit? I hope he's not going out and spending money that could be used for, say, membership fees ...

This is what the CTT guidance note says:
Rider Safety
(The Abandonment of Events)

All courses are designed and approved with safety in mind, however exceptional circumstances may arise which compromise rider safety to such an extent that the event has to be abandoned. While every case has to be individually assessed on its own merit, the promoter’s first consideration MUST be the safety of the riders in the event. All other considerations such as the length of time some riders have been on the road, or the distance they may have travelled to the event have to be discounted.

It is very difficult to generalise and to cover all circumstances, but the National Committee has drawn up the following guidelines:

Roadwork/coned off carriageways

When an organiser is aware that there is a section of the proposed course affected by roadwork and/or coned off section of carriageway, an assessment must be made of the problem and how it will affect the safety of the competitors. As a general principal, time trials MUST NOT pass through more than 200 metres of coned off carriageway. Drivers of previously fast moving vehicles quickly become impatient if held up behind a rider for more than a short time. If the end of the coned off section can be seen from where it begins, traffic is likely to be more patient. If not, it will try to squeeze past with potentially catastrophic consequences. It may be that in certain circumstances, a distance of 200 metres is too far and in these cases the section of road must not be used.
The above applies to dual carriageway roads where riders have to pass through the coned off section or where a lane is lost to accommodate oncoming traffic i.e. contraflow. Workings on single carriageway roads that narrow the carriageway so as to prevent vehicles crossing in opposite directions must be marshalled to ensure that all riders obey the law of the land and any traffic signals.

I am getting mixed messages from people who have been there recently. PVT is seeking advice from the London South CTT, but all I can suggest in the meantime is that the situation is assessed tomorrow evening dependent on the actual state of the roadworks and amount of traffic at the time.

I've just taken a spin around it in the car. It in coned to 1 lane for about 0.4 miles - rather more than last time. It is signposted as a 30mph limit - if that makes any difference. I can't see Tom maintaining 30mph through there though.
