Lost his zip ?

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

 Yep he apparently dropped out of last weeks (Aug 15th) Palace race despite both his son and girlfriend trying to urge him on. To save the club from embaraassment he decided not to participate in yesterday's race. Look out for a return next week. Oh dear! :(

Oh dear indeed, he has even started speaking about himself in the third person!

Hope to make it next week, hope Toks you can locate your zip by then - otherwise just ride commando-style ...

dropped out in front of the girlfriend and son!! oh the shame! I wouldn't be surprised if they're doubting your previous performances then (most men liking to talk up their performances  ). Actually you must have been really down on form - what's happened? Hope to see you next tuesday though. :?: :?:

I'm not really sure what happened. All of a sudden races seemed to be a lot harder than normal. Last week at Palace my chest started hurting with about ten laps to go despite me having taken a complete week off the bike.

Perhaps it comes down to poor sleep. I can generally only ever sleep for about five hours. Couple this with me doing about 3 race pace efforts each week for the month of July and I guess something had to give.

Anyway my resting heart rate is normal and I don't appear to have any of those other markers which define burnout (not wanting to train, irritablity, fatigue, not eating etc). I did 40miles today with at least 30mins at race pace and felt pretty good so lets see what happens next week :)

Toks that doesn't sound good dude, unfortunately I'm not medically qualified but some would say  I possess the lesser discipline of being scientifically read.
You wouldn't see burnout signs if it was only your heart that wanted to give up! Not saying your chest pain was cardio related, but you've got to be realistic under the circumstances that it could be, or most likely skeletal muscle blood deficiency (analagous to a stitch), having been off the bike for a while. I used to get it as a cross country runner when I was a kid...thought I was having a heart attack!!!

3 race pace sessions (I presume you mean above lactate threshold?) a week is a bit excessive don't you think? sorry to be critical, not that I'm an experienced elite rider or am overly qualified to deliberate on such matters.
Since being over here and racing alot, I've looked into the whole thing with alot more depth (bit bored at work), and there are definite guidelines/protocols to be followed if you want to improve performance and maintain form, not that my compliance is itself constant but just felt like you gave me the opportunity to spread the word!! I know you're always well up on these matters and are voice of experience.
I need an advantage to even have a slight chance in some of these fields, no handicaps here, only age dictates what race your in! 32 and still classed a Junior, it's not fair

The reviewers on this website in States have got it sussed when it comes to being serious about the sport

I think everyone new to racing should take a look at some of the articles, they're very pertinant and not heavy going, actually some of the guys are hilarious. Even if you're more seasoned it's a good refresher and could possibly put you back on track..

Anyway, thats my tuppence worth......see you for the SL handicap champs at Henfold Hill 17th September..Its actually on my birthday, so I'm looking for a good performance!! but you'll probably kick my ass............

I particularly think that this article is quite inspirational...athletes vs competitors

Hey Simon thanks for your concern I checked out the website you posted and there's some great advice there. [quote]You wouldn't see burnout signs if it was only your heart that wanted to give up! Not saying your chest pain was cardio related, but you've got to be realistic under the circumstances that it could be, or most likely skeletal muscle blood deficiency (analagous to a stitch), having been off the bike for a while. Just to make it clear, the chest pain I was describing was the type you normally get when you make a very very intense effort on the bike. It didn't feel life threatening - yes my breathing felt very laboured and I was suffering; but it was more than I'd expect to be at that point of the race.

[quote]3 race pace sessions (I presume you mean above lactate threshold?) a week is a bit excessive don't you think?
Yeah each session would've been close to threshold (TT/RR pace) and definitely above my lactate threshold (17mpg pace). Each session would've be around an hour and any other riding would be at recovery pace or I would simply not ride the bike. It didn't feel excessive at the time but looking back at my July races I never just 'sat in'. I was always attacking or chasing which meant significant periods above threshold. At the time I felt great but my sleep patterns were very poor so I'm sure thats why I was so fatigued. Once again, cheers Simon
