ACC Open 25 - 25/04/10

A nice early start to the day with the weatherman promising it to be the hottest day of the year (nightmare for the marathon) and only showers

Well having done this before I took everything with me, underlayer, thermal jumper, down feather body warmer and wax cotton jacket; then supported by chair, hat, umbrella, boots and hot drink, and used it all

It started off OK but then some ominous clouds moved in, the temperature dropped, wind picked up and the heavens opened - but I was OK as I was prepared, however I saw Marcus head off to the next roundabout having just cycled down it what I think was his summer kit :(

A very big chapeau to Tamar and co for organising and supporting this as it was very professionally done and as a marshall you get treated well; Keith C came around with the high viz gilets, orange juice, jaffa cake, wages and a really nice letter from Tamar - we have definately moved on. 8) 8) 8)

Some action shots below and apologies to George, Sylvain for no photos of them as the battery on my camera ran out (must carry spare next time)

Mr PVT strutting his stuff, he was that fast he caught me out twice on my roundabout  but still managed to get this shot in.

Mr Andrew G taking his minuteman, no hang-on maybe not he has got reflectors on his wheels

Mark M looking strong and going for his PB until he went around my roundabout a couple of times for his photo (my fault again)

You do not see many of these - check out the front brake arrangement, regardless he still did it in 1:07:38 even with all the roundabouts

Except for the spare camera battery

Busy old time on the canteen with Joyce - yes, Marcus, listen to the boss next time! Having had an interesting detour through Crawley with Mike I and daughter Chloe, I arrived to find that we were in the bar this time - only ever seen it through the other doors from the kitchen. Definitely warmer and more comfortable than the hall :D Joyce was pretty much set up and ready to go by the time I got there so it was just a few final touches before we started the tea going.... and it didn't stop for the next few hours...

Joyce's back was aching and all I wanted to do was sit down as my legs were aching from the odd hill the day before and then standing around all afternoon pretty much making my two cakes (2nd attempt on sponge a bit better... :? ) and then even more standing around. But every time I thought I could have a break there'd be one more rider wanting a cup of tea or coffee - I think most of them wanted to hug the teapot or the water boiler after their drenching

Anyway, the dust settled and most of the hoards left, leaving a weary few to clear up and head into Horsham for brunch at the Park Cafe. I was anticipating a full English but the cafe's changed hands and all I got was scrambled egg on toast :( I have to say that it was proper bread though, brown or white. And it was enough to get me back home on the bike. I've finally sorted out the route from the cafe to get to the road up Old Holbrook (some may remember passing it on their way round the course...) which is a pretty little lane with trees, violets, celandines, anemones and the bluebells just starting to come out in full bloom :D before hitting the club run route back in reverse to home and some R&R time with the cat
