Fixed conversion - Crank touches chainstay

Postby Brian Robinson » Mon Aug 09, 2010 3:21 pm

I've just finished a year long project converting an old steel Pinarello to fixed. I took it out for a spin at the weekend and heard a light knocking sound :( . To my dismay the right crank is skimming the chainstay, particularly under load.

I've got a Miche Primato chainset with track bottom bracket. It didn't even occur to me that there wouldn't be enough clearance (Duh!) as there was only 1 choice for the Miche BB (107mm). However, looking on wiggle at other BBs there appears to be choice of width.

Can I just get a wider BB to resolve the problem? Or is that too simple? Anyone had similar problems?

Cheers.

You can adjust the Miche BB and adjust how far it sticks out each side by adjusting how far you screw in the cups on each side - this is the beauty of this BB - so you can get a perfect chain line.

chain line is something you might want to check if your crank is catching the chainstay as well - sounds like it might be out of the cranks are catching - what length cranks are they? and is the chain ring almost catching?
not sure about a different BB - but make sure you get one with a compatible taper

Thanks Rob.

I didn't realise there was flexibility with the BB, I didn't fit it myself due to the need for re-thread of BB. When I was riding (only went 100 yds) the chain did sound a bit odd which may tie in with the chain alignment issue you mention.
