Snowy Saturday

Postby Nick » Sat Jan 07, 2006 2:23 pm

I eventually got to go on a Club Run and what happens? There's snow falling. I left my house this morning with very little snow and I was riding through to croydon it got heavier and heavier and by now my fingers were beyond feeling anything and my toes had gone the same way but I pressed on not wanting to miss another CR. As an insentive I promised myself a pair of Overshoes and new Gloves from GB's on my way home. But when I got to CSS I was too cold and stood around about 20 riders turned up and set about there way in 2 groups, But I went the other way back to GB's And some new equipment. I am now fully winterised and looking forward to some the coming winter months......

How did the rest of you Guys and Girls get on? Was there more snow on your CR? Or did the Sun break through and warm you all up.

PS There was a white van in the carpark but we all left safetly, No kidnappings today I'm glad to say.

Well done to the hardy souls who went on the CR.

Light snow when I got up, falling even harder by the time I should have left so I chickened out and turned the heating up another notch.

Gavin, feel I might suffer next week if your getting the miles in on days like today.

I was pretty cold on the ride out to the cafe in the snow, all the spray socked froze my feet. A lovely hot cup of tea at the cafe gave us time to warm up. Luckily it stopped snowing for the return.
I was glad I made the effort, it wasn't as bad as I thought.

well i got up in time to ride but it was pouring down with snow,. Chris called at 8 and said lets wait a while, eventually we left about 12.30 - the sun nearly shone! Out thru the back lanes to Dorking up over Ranmore- every thing up here was covered in snow- quick descent down thru west humble and back over boxhill with a quick cuppa and flapjack at the top- 2 and a half hour spin in the dry 8) . Going up box hill the sun did shine and the surrounding hills covered in snow looked great.

When I woke up and saw the snow, I must admit that I was tempted to get back into bed too. The snow wasn't settling on the road, so decided to at least make it to CSS. Caught Alan on the way who said I must be mad - which I guess implied he was mad too! Apart from the last leg to the caf where it was sleating heavily, slush on the road, and a horrible spray soaking us down, it was a very enjoyable refreshing ride. :D

Went to bed on Friday soberish and ready to rock.
Woke up to a white blanket and went back to bed feeling depressed.
Obviously not as hardy as some, but I did the entire club run including box hill on my tod today. It was even raining all the way back from the dual carriageway to make me nice and cold like all you guys yesterday.

Roll on spring.

Was fully motivated after a long stretch off the bike, so it didn't occur to me not to go out. Rain turned to sleet turned to snow but great fun. Must admit to feeling a bit sick due to the numbness in my feet on the way back but recovered quickly.

If anything, yesterdays ride was worse. Not the same extreme conditions, and even started off milder, but the temperature dropped and the rain came down and by the time I got home I was hurting, physically and mentally.

By the time the feeling had come back to my extremities I was happy that I'd managed to clock up 130 miles in such bad conditions over the weekend.

When I heard about the sad news of the crash in Wales, I was just happy that I could look forward to another weekend cycling.

Much respect to anyone who braved the weather this weekend.

I stayed indoors, managing 1-1/2 hours in the gym on Sat, 1 hour on the turbo on Sun, and watched the CSC "Overcoming" film on DVD.

It really was a ride of two halves yesterday in terms of my enjoyment of it. Loved the main ride with a small but perfectly-formed group, but hated the slog back home from Merstham to Brixton. The roadwork-infested run down to Coulsdon was jammed with cars and had all manner of obstacles waiting for the unwary cyclist (open/raised drains, assorted road signs strewn about, loose pebbles, etc, etc).

The worst bit was the never-fun stretch between Croydon and Brixton. It seemed to take an eternity - I was freezing cold and completely wet through by now and could barely hang on to the bike, just when I needed to most.

I've heard it said that there's no such thing as bad weather, just inadequate clothing. Well, yesterday, my clothing was very, very inadequate indeed. Hope everyone else made it home OK and enjoyed that warm glow of achievement and virtue for the rest of the day.
