hi Jon,

i would like to do this , or some other event on Exmoor , but I have just come back from a week in Plymouth ( did the Tour of Dartmoor for 4th time ), and was not planning to go back down that way so soon ... Been reading about the Black Rat ride down there that was on recently - that sounded v hard !
Tour of Dartmoor was v windy and quite lonely - seems like a lot of riders turned off at the 85 mile mark, I finished 12th out of only 66 to do the 106 miles...

cheers Jon, but are you confusing the Tour of Dartmoor with the Dartmoor Classic ? I have ridden the T of D 4 times now, it is a lot smaller than the Classic, and I think the route is a bit harder than the Classic route of the last two years... Thought I would have bumped into you at Ashburton ( River Dart Country Park ), start if you were there in the past ?

Did it a couple of years ago and the ride was more like 111 miles but its a great ride and luckily the weather was pretty good. I wont be doing it this year as I'm just too outa shape . One word of warning...get an early start and try to keep a decent pace as they were pretty strict about the "cut off" time, if you didnt make to the main feed station at Simonsbath (where the ride splits) on time and were planning to do the 100 mile route you'd find the sign had been taken away and your told to do the 100k route instead. Its probably a different route now though as I started at some resevoir in the middle of nowhere. In 2008 when you handed your transponder back you got an Exmoor beast beers glass which you could go and fill up with exmoor beast ale in the beer tent!!

ah yes - remember that well :) it was v hot for the end of May that year... That was the Classic, and they made it slightly easier the next year and same course this year ( which I rode - got a Gold for 6:26 i think ), because they did not take you up the big climb at Dartmeet... We hurtled down that one last Saturday on the Tour, I clocked 48 before my bottle went ! hope you have a great day on Exmoor Jon :)

Tribute's nice for a paler ale, personally I prefer the darker ones as a rule. Some porter's are nice, speaking of which if they're still dishing up the same beer after this ride you may want to have someone come and collect you...

Although not a patch on HSB, a Gale's beer now brewed at new owners Fullers brewery in Chiswick.

This splendid 4.8% ABV tipple is now widely available in Fullers pubs and, with London Pride chasers, makes for a memorable night out. Accompanied by pork scratchings to encompass the major food groups and provide the RDA of most vitamins :D

Used to like Gales HSB but it was aptly named for the heavy wind generated.
