The talcum powder trick not only stops the tube and tyre sticking to each other, it also helps the tyre to slip on the rim. If you dust your spares and stick them in a plastic bag, there should be enough there to make on-the-road repairs a bit easier. Plus, it's not as messy as carrying a bottle of Fairy around all day, and you'll smell better in the cafe.

If you do get the Contis on, remember only to get punctures in the summer, when the tyres will be warmer and that much more supple!

They come in both flavours, wire & kevlar.

I used Gatorskins on my winter hack for a while and I found that for quite a long time I did not get a puncture, but then all of a sudden they just seemed to perish and I was getting punctures gallore. I ditched them and went for something really cheap and cheerful that have awful rolling resistance so that I get the benefit of riding that bike over my racing bike.

So on my winter hack I have currently got Vittoria Zaffiros. I have had them for about 3 months and I have only had one puncture on the rear which was when I went through a load of glass. Although I would say that they are starting to look a bit worn now and I may need to replace them soon, but these tyres are mega cheap so am not too bothered.

In regards to getting the tyres on have you tried first of all standing inside them and pulling on them for a bit. Once you stretch them a little they should be fine.

Cheers
