XC MTB Shoes

Postby simon Lythgoe » Fri Dec 21, 2012 11:26 am

Although I'm in danger of coming across a bit 'Sex in the City', can I ask if anyone has some advice on what XC MTB shoes to buy.
I want something racey and lightweight.
I have an old pair of Specialized Comp which I use for commuting and MTB and have lasted years, but I think they might be a bit weighty and I don't know if there are better options?

If the Specialized ones fit, then there is a strong argument for sticking with them, but looking at their S-Works and Pro-MTB ranges for lighter weight.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Sidi shoes. I've a pair that are about 9 years old now and have survived 5 summers of guiding on Colorado and Utah (my fellow guides went through one or two pairs of "other brand" shoes per summer), they are still going strong although they have been "relegated" to commuter duty. Sidi may seem expensive, but if you get as much use out of them as I have, they become excellent value for money.

I like Sidi shoes too - I use their competition MTB shoes on my road bike so I can walk around normally  And in the past I've been able to replace the treads rather than buy a whole new pair of shoes :D

Another vote for the Specialized. But only if they fit. Some, like Shimano are narrow, North Wave are wide. The Specialized happen to fit me perfectly.

Sidi are available in regular (narrow) and "Mega last" (wide) fittings.

I have wide feet, but find the regular Sidi shoes perfectly comfortable. Your mileage may vary, as they say.

I use FiveTen MTB shoes with studded flat pedals. Cycleworks In Leatherhead sell 'em. They are dead comfy and highly water resistant. They use the same smart rubber compound on the soles as they do on their climbing boots, super grippy.
