Petition re cycling in Surrey

Postby spike » Thu Sep 26, 2013 5:08 pm

Not the best worded petition, but I agree with the sentiments and have signed. I think it is important that we cyclists voice our sentiments. So have a look and if you agree sign it!

Written by the Daily Mail's cycling correspondent presumably judging by the amount of vitriol.
[quote]The Ride London 100 is NOT a race, but a cyclosportive

True but a lot of sportive riders should be reminded of this too. Often some of the worst riding you'll witness.
[quote]"...riding in large groups sometimes three and four abreast or in strings of riders making it virtually impossible for the poor old motorist, many of whom are elderly, to overtake."

"Cyclist's are encourage's to "take the lane" and not ride in the gutter, also riding abreast of each other is quite legal and even suggested in the highway code. It may be a nuisance to some of the residents on the route, but have they thought about the money that people bring into the area..."

It's been a long time since I've seen such horrendously made cases.

Poor old motorist! Hardly a cause for a pathetic phrase like that. Why does it matter the elderly driver's age? And how many are elderly? Riding 3 or 4 abreast is wrong and completely inconsiderate and the highway code he points to says 2 abreast so any more. Riding 2 abreast is wrong if the road narrows or is twisty, you should single out, I think the highway code says this too. Large groups are a problem on single carriageway roads, sportive routes should consider this with their route to stick a tough climb in early on to string groups out.

How do you "encourage's"? I guess the foaming froth from their mouth caused their fingers to slip on the keyboard. Bringing money to the area is a terrible arguement with little or no basis behind it, and if you raise that then you have to be prepared to counter the clear up costs arguement too.

[quote]"Traffic violations are common and it is only a matter of time before there is a major accident with the possibility of the loss of life. It will of course be the motorists fault. "

Yes, it will be the motorists fault if it turns out to be they are the violator of the law.

And the cyclists if it is their fault.

[quote]"Have Surrey County Council considered the number of heavy goods vehicles using the roads. The route chosen is all enclosing and no provision has been made for vehicular crossing points. So to facilitate a bike ride many Surrey residents are to be confined to their homes from 5 am until 9 pm."

With it being a mass participation event, the need for such a long closure is clear, with cyclists being sent off in "waves" and riding at different speeds, a rolling road block is not feasible for such a large event.

The need for road closure is not clear at all. The London Marathon can close roads for a mass participation event as it covers a relatively small area, closing roads for such a long period over such a huge distance is ridiculous. If you take your lycra tinted specs off and apply what was done to anything that you don't do and the effects it would have had on you for any journeys made and it's easy to see why it upsets so many. Huge chunks of time would have had single strings of riders passing through having a whole road closed for them, madness. Closed roads for things like the Sky Rides etc that only close a limted sized area and are very kid and novice friendly, but a hundred miles of roads from central London through the suburbs and back will rub more people up the wrong way than vice versa.

Whilst the original petition has some crass comments this one has far more.

I think there are too many sportives now as they have become an easy MAMIL cash cow, and the biggest problem with them is the lack of regulation. Any road racing or TTs have to cover a multitude of considerations and standards which sportives don't. They should be regulated so that they are run in a responsible and considerate manner, a simple example is the amount of arrows littering the countryside left up from sportives which hardly enhance the sights of lovely lanes and villages look. A number of races I've done, and others I know about have had problems with sportives crossing a part of the course. This should never happen as the races are in a calendar on known courses from the start of the year, if not before.

I think we can all agree it's not the best worded of petitions and I take your point about too many poorly run sportives. But perhaps it's just me but I'm not sure I get a feeling of vitriol from it. I think he/she is trying to balance/counter Ian Huggins' 'Stop Surrey being turned into a cycle track' petition, which let's be honest is a rant against road closures in particular and cyclists in general. So yes, not a great petition, but I agree with Spike, worth signing nonetheless more as a counter-weight to Huggins' petition than any great commitment to what the petition actually says.

As I have said on other forums, you only have to see and hear the comments made by Surrey residents when you are marshalling club events! Indeed it was commented on by two older ladies at the Presidents 10 just before the start of it. They were getting it confused with some other race that was on at the time

This is now a major story in the Surrey Mirror where it's being reported as a counter petition to the original petition against cycle racing in Surrey. The paper, keeping things simple for the general public, is scoring the petitions in favour = 1,900 signatures, against = 2,900.
