I've just bought a Brompton, only 2 speed, and I am amazed. As you say Sean, they perform better than you think and they are incredibly handy. Quick and easy to fold and unfold, so much so that you tend to take it with you wherever you go. I had thought that the 2 speed might be very limiting. Although the ratios are 74in and 56in I can still manage 20mph on the flat and climb a 17% hill. Remember I'm in my 60's so a younger and fitter rider should do a lot better than this. I know others have been surprised and unable to explain the results. I did read a report recently, though, that said that under 16mph the miniture wheels peform better. Between 16-33mph, wheel size made no difference but at 33mph the larger wheel ie. as on a road bike, comes into its own as the momentum plays an imprtant role.
Sean I don't understand what you mean about the seat turning. It shouldn't. Sounds like it needs returning to the shop to be sorted.
