Wanted - a nice pair of handbuilt roadwheels

Postby Grahame » Wed Nov 22, 2006 12:00 pm

As it says in the title, I need a new pair of wheels for the summer bike. (The rear rim has split on the old ones, and a replacement Ambrosio rim is going to take a while to get here)

So before I go to the shop to buy some, I thought I'd ask if any agreeables have something they want rid of.

My desired wheel specification:

Nice (Shimano compatible) hubs, 130mm OLN rear hub, Ultegra or similar would be good.

9 speed freehub.

Popular rim, Mavic Open 4 is ideal.

Stainless spokes.

Note, I don't want factory or kit wheels, 'cos I'm fussy, not too bothered about a few extra grams, and want to be able to maintain them myself quickly and at reasonable cost when the rims wear out.

What have you got?

Grahame I have a pair of nice wheels I'm not using:

2006 Ultegra hubs 8/9/10s

Black Open pro rims,

Black spokes.

Built by Howard this time last year.

Will swap for Dekerf :D

A DeKerf sticker? I can do that.

More seriously, if you do want to sell them Simon, text me with a price.

I didn't think it would hold up for that long Grahame ;-)

Forgot to say spokes are DT Swiss Comp (double butted) black.
i.e. Sturdy.

Revolutions are the thin ones.

I've got a pair of Open Pro on Ultegra with DT swiss spokes, 28F 32R built by Dave Hinde about 6 years ago, and I'm keeping them coz they're ace and have never needed trueing in all that time. But if you end up buying new I'd recommend him as a builder.

The deal's done with Simon.

Actually, I'm more than happy to build my own wheels, and if nobody had had anything suitable, I'd have been off to the LBS to buy the components then gone home and settled down with the wheel jig and a big cup of tea for a relaxing hour and a half (each wheel usually takes me about 45 minutes or so).

It took me about 9 months to build a rear wheel, and I haven't finished the front yet, so that's probably at least 12 months so far

It gets easier the more wheels you build.

By the time you're onto your 3rd pair, you'll probably have the build time down to 2 or 3 months.

My Pete Matthews paris - roubaix wheels have lasted brilliantly since buying last year. Deep section rims and 36 spoke means extra stong for going over the infamous South London Pave sections

Recommend him if you fancy having wheels built.

Sounds like you're more experienced wheel builder Grahame than me.

I had to have the front wheel trued after this guy in an Alfa Romeo drove into me. The wheels fine now do not fear and i got my fifteen pounds compensation without going through insurers.
