I thought it looked like a chicken leg glued to a sea shell. I can see yours looks a bit more business-like.

Yes, it is a sea shell. This is the symbol of the camino and you see it everywhere - almost a brand. The Camino creates a huge inward investment into rural Spain and is cashed in on by every pueblo along the way. many 'perigrinos' wear a shell on their rucksack or bike. I wore my colnago vest!

Here is an example of public fencing along the camino.
