Raphas kind of like the Marks and Sparks of cycle wear! Well made but boring and conservative and the outrageous prices make it all seem a tad pretencious. But then what do I know, I like riding around in dayglo pink and silver!

You need more than an overpriced piece of knitwear to be retro cool.
Which reminds me, I must dust down red bike before tomorrow. Apparently there are going to be pictures taken and everything, so best to make sure everything's nice and shiny.

I have to disagree as well. I think they are more like the Burberry of the cycling world. 
Lots of people aspire to the look, but can only afford either fakes or the cap.

Nah, Armani is ugly, and rubbish quality. I'd say Paul Smith was nearer the mark - good designs, OK materials, construction and fit nothing special: generally overpriced.

While we're on the subject of marketing and products...
Chatting with the guy I was getting my legs ripped off by round the hilly 50 on monday (well he was chatting... I was making a kind of sickly, dribbling noise and just wobbling my head) we got on to the subject of power meters for training (he was contemplating buyong one off Gary Dodd)
We were both staggered by the cost of even the most basic models.
Surely the technology exists to make a budget powermeter, we agreed, and can you imagine the killing the company that comes up with the first one will make. Everyone, but everyone who's into racing or TTs would buy one.
Surely someone like Vetta or Cateye would be looking at the possibilities don't you think? Here's hoping

Adrian, did you know that you can actually get a Paul Smith bike? I still can't decide whether it's retro cool, urban chic or just a bit chav though. Certainly very expensive, so it ticks that box.

That said the original Epic cap is superb. I'm quite patrial to a casquette and have quite a few. The Rapha one is by far the best quality. At £20 is was expensive for what it is but at the same time the amount I've worn it has given plenty of VFM.
Not keen on the jerseys or shorts etc (do you really need sniper padding on a pair of gloves
), but the softshell jacket and rain jacket have so many good reviews I would consider them if I could get one in a sale. Overpriced but I think they fall in to the same VFM category as the cap from the amount of wear I'd get from them.
Don't really know how powermeters work, bit technical for me, but I know there is a cateye one. Whether it was an attempt to do a cheap one I don't know but it apparantly is not very accurate as it measures it off the chain. It also involves strapping a ton of wire to the bike and a bloody great big plastic block to the chainstay.
I wonder what "one bottle" MrPVT makes of these things. MrPVT you are a bit of an enigma in that you love the new carbon goodies but combine it with a more old fashioned "ride to races" training style.
