I don't know, but given the result is (2^16)-1, ie the largest number that can be stored in 2 bytes (16 bits) ignoring sign, it's something to do with switching between the number of bytes used?
Wiki has the answer.
In Microsoft Excel 2003 and lower, the maximum amount of rows one was allowed to use was 65535. In Microsoft Office 2007 this has been extended to 1,048,576 (or 2^20) rows.

Feel better now?

Not really. I thought it was going to be one of those things where it comes up 'w*nker' or something.

I'm using Office 2007 and get 100,000.
We have support for our Microsoft products.

I am very tempted to log this as a call!
