"Max Test. Max Heart Rate, VO2 Max ? the mere words force the heart rate up !!

What use is maximal testing to exhaustion when my aims are simply to get fitter, ride complete Etape du Tour, beat Tashkent or do a personal best in a local time trial ?

I never get near my max heart rate when riding (if I can possibly help it) so of what use is all this scientific data to me ? Isn?t it the domain of elite athletes ?

?Far from it?, says Dr Auriel Forrester of Scientific Coaching and author of Spindoctor turbo training. ?The so called ?Max Test? or ?King Cycle Test? is just as relevant to non elite as elite riders ? perhaps even more so?.

Dr Auriel Forrester, of Scientific Coaching and formerly Head of Sport Science at the University of Luton, together with Stuart Dangerfield?s coach, Professor Gordon Wright, have scientifically validated a method of predicting lactate threshold without the need for gas analysis or lactate testing. This means that the rider can ride his or her own bike and there is no need for blood sampling or for collecting expired gas through a very uncomfortable mouthpiece system. "
