:roll: on a more practical note.....
Fixed gear riders are safer in their own group.
It gets a bit hairy when those with freewheels brake hard in front of a fixed rider.

:oops: My mistake

Power = energy/time
= force x distance/time

ie 1 watt = 1 joule per second
= 1 newton moved through 1 metre in the direction of the force per second.

[quote]are you sure?

i thought

power = work/time = force*displacement/time

Sorry.
I meant to type work/time

I remember now why I gave up physics at the earliest opportunity (1980, since you ask).

Here's some useful stuff on how to turn the spare bits in the shed into a fixie.

Cheers for that Marco.

Yes there's room for movement both forewards and back in the dropouts. So potentially I think it would make a good conversion I'm just a little worried about the frame's alignment, after the knocks and scrapes it's had over the years. WHat I think I'll do is take it to Bike Plus for them to have a look at and size up the cost of conversion.At the mo I can't see me ever finding the time to getting round to stripping the bike down. Not a nice job in my eyes, one I'd willingly pay someone else to do.

Thanks for the advice, v helpful (as ever),

Kasper

[quote="44x16"]Crikey! I was just trying to see if there was any interest, not start a fight.
We can't have you promising gains that are not backed by scientific evidence. 8) Next thing you'll be telling people to smoke a cigarette to open up their lungs before climbing mountains; telling people not to hydrate on long rides or even worst of all telling people they must ride slowly for 3-5 months if they want to have a good competitive season :wink: [quote="Colin Steadman"][quote]
Actually, force x distance = work,

force x time = power.

Sorry...I'm not letting that go :)
Power is the rate of doing work
i.e. force/time
Oops my bad! thanks Colin and Grahame that'll teach me to post while drinking :wink: .POWER= the rate of doing work, where work is equal to force x distance.

Tut, tut Toks, nobody said must ride slowly....and the S still stands for steady :wink: .

While we're picking holes the reason for smoking tabs before a big climb was to increase the heart rate and therefore pump oxygen round the body quicker. There scientific :lol: .

I don't know if you were meant to keep lighting fags on the climb as you started to suffer to get the blood going again, bit of a vicious circle as another fag would also increase the wheezing. :D Could be tricky on a windy day too, probably better to go for a large cigar at the bottom and just keep it ticking over. Spectators would be able to judge the difficulty of climb by the length of the cigar the riders got out their pockets. "Only a Hamlet, must be a cat 2".

Since this thread has now been taken so far off-topic, here's someone who thinks you should not hydrate on a long ride. I'm not saying he's right, mind, or that the science stacks up.

Now, where's my pipe?
