One trick I heard was to put ice cubes down your seat tube. Obviously only effective if your frame has drainage holes! Might not work so well on really cold days either...

See, they've beaten you in the head game already Adam - next you'll be worrying about what gearing they've got, how much training time they've had, if what they had for breakfast was better than you - you've lost before you start :D

[quote="marco"]I think there is import duty as well as VAT - the rate is written down on the customs and excise website but i cant find it at the moment - there are different rates for different items - components, bikes and frames will all have a different ratings, maybe thats where the discrepencies Hugh mentioned come from

and a customs handling charge, and i think tax is worked out on total cost including shipping.

ISTR one issue is that "finished items" are charged differently from "unfinished items/spare parts" (not sure of actual nomenclature) and which bike parts are considered to be varies.

i think i worked out once that around 40% was the maximum charge that could be levied on something like a bike frame

Ive found import duty reasonable. I bought a few things from US inc a powertap hub and only paid £60 inc handling charged and reckon I saved at least £200 if I bought it here.

I will let you know the cost when it arrives.
