Anyone fancy a night ride to Brighton?

Postby Tim Coales » Fri Mar 07, 2008 2:59 pm

I'm planning on doing this overnight ride to Brighton:

Thursday 20th March 2008 Friday Night Ride to the Coast (FNRttC) - CTC Cheam & Morden Section Coast Ride
Meet under Constitution Arch, Hyde Park Corner at midnight for a ride to the coast.
Return by train or train or ride back.
Good Lights essential. DA Event Moderate Pace

Details on: http://www.anothercyclingforum.com/inde ... ic=48374.0

I'm going to ride my Pearson tourer with Dynohub and plan riding back too :D
Means I'll probably miss the Good Friday track meeting at Herne Hill though

There's a series of them throughout the summer (see http://www.aqvm78.dsl.pipex.com/SWLDA/Other/watson.htm)
but I chose this one so I can still do my VC roll on the Easter Saturday Club Run.

I am planning a club night ride to Brighton, so this would be good practice.

What speed do you call "moderate pace"?

[quote]For those of you who don't know the form - here's the basics. The FNRttC runs monthly from spring to late autumn. It's a Cheam and Morden CTC ride. Most of the rides go to Brighton, but we'll be doing Southend in April and Wittering in May. The ride sets off from Hyde Park Corner at midnight. We wander, as a group, through Chelsea, Clapham, Tooting and Mitcham. At Mitcham there's a bit of spreading out, but the quicker riders stop and wait from time to time. We leave the lit roads and head over the hill at Chipstead, then zoom, decorously, downhill to Reigate. Most of us travel at a conversational pace, and, while, once again, there's a bit of spreading out, we do collect every three miles or so. We head down Lonesome Lane and have a coffee break around Gatwick. The second half of the ride is much the same - we go down B roads, small lanes, one bit of (easy) off road, keeping a gentle pace, and stopping for the occasional chat. The rides are timed to co-incide with the full moon, so there's usually a good deal of light about. We gather at the foot of Ditchling Beacon, ride to the top, look at the view and the drift happily into Brighton, where most of us take a train to London. We've had people who have never been on a CTC ride, never ridden at night, and quite a few who have never ridden sixty miles before. For some it's an adventure, for others it's a chance to chat and ride at the same time, and for some of us it's a bit of romance. There isn't a timetable, and it's definitely not about the bike - spokeydokeys are allowed, if not encouraged. The age range is 5 to 66. We have expert Tail End Charlies who help with mechanicals, and ensure that nobody gets left behind. Pre-registration is a must, and you have to have good lights (and the batteries to go with them). Clothing needs a bit of thought. It's always a bit colder than you think - particularly if you're a Londoner. A few light layers, that can be peeled off if need be is the smart way to go, and if the weather forecast gives a hint of rain a waterproof is de rigeur. Think about gloves. Please give your tyres a look over - punctures are very infrequent, but they do throw the ride out of kilter. To pre-register PM me with your name, your CTC number (if you have one), and your mobile number. There's a wealth of threads on ACF that will give you a flavour. We've had people describe this as the best bicycle ride of their lives. People dine out on it. Few, if any, will not be entranced by the mist lifting under an orange sunrise in Sussex. It is, genuinely, a delight

Are you still doing this (Paul, Tim)? I would've liked to but the weather man/website says it'll be light rain all night and a 20mph westerly. On the plus side it should stop it getting to too arctic in temperature. Good luck if you do it, hope it isn't too wet.

Yes, Andrew, fool that I am, I'm still going! It sounds like someone called "Tourist Tony" who must live on route somewhere, is providing a rather good sounding nosh up. :D I've got me thermals out, packed a survival bag and am considering taking some folding knobbly cross-tyres! Might come across a few ACC'ers enjoying a Good Friday ride on my way back home, otherwise see you on Saturday.

Good to see that the fun is spreading to all Cycling groups. Tim see you at Hyde park. I intend to ride back as well what ever the weather throws at us. I did a 200 audax last sunday when it rained all day so it cant get much worse than that. Remember to bring an extra Layer as it is nearly always very cold when we leave Tony Tourists house. That part of the route is the little bit of off road that is compulsory with any CTC ride.

A good ride not to fast. We were well fed at Tony Tourists after our leader attempted to miss it out all together, fortunately his senior moment relapsed and we cycled the mile back to Tonys house. We didnt want to get there too early. Ditchling will need to be renamed DitchFling as at the top we were hit by a little shower with very strong winds that flinged you into the ditch at any opportunity. Riding styles were quite interesting to watch.
I was the only one mad enough to ride home from Brigton the rest caught the train. A 4 hour slog into a variety of wind speeds. As soon as you attempted to pick up speed him upstairs had a different idea.

I was at Hyde Park at Midnight after getting absolutely drenched, and no-one was there. Went all round the park and asked several people, but no sign of any other cyclists.

Rode back down at warp speed (wind behind me) as far as Purley, at which point I decided I didn't fancy the entire ride alone, and cut back home. Still a good 3 hour training ride :!:

This will be repeated throughout the year, and I will do an ACC version in June, when the weather should be a bit better.

If you ride in June, it should be so light that you'll only need a basic LED light to be seen by, this means everyone can come on their exotica!
