First-of-Month Ride

Postby Andy » Fri Jul 02, 2004 2:18 pm

Does this actually happen? Because the times I've been, it seems like there's no special group set out; just two groups - one of them fast, one slow with the slow ones leaving first and fast ones flying past on the run in to Charlwood.

I doubt I'm going anyway with weather pretty atrocious (it's thunder and rain as I type), but the speed doesn't seem to be too leisurely..... I was riding 17mph+ on the flat the majority of the time.

Anyway, just a question hehe.

Hi Andy,

I haven't been on the club run for a while but I think you are right that the groupings had seemed to of got a bit mixed up. When I last went I think there were only a couple of groups.

I suppose the important thing is that no one is getting dropped. If you were going 17mph and you and everyone else managed to keep up then you were probably going the correct speed for your group. You have to remember that you don't want it to be too easy else you will never get any fitter.

If you were really struggling then maybe you should just shout out to the leader who should slow it down to make it reasonable for every rider.

May see you out tomorrow if you are brave enough to suffer the rain.

Cheers

Marek....

Typically, it was sunny.

Now I have to wait till September (on holiday). I went off on my own, turned left with CSS in sight, then went along Farthing Downs on Ditches Lane for a bit.... nice jaunt, in nice weather, although there was a definite headwind on the way there.

Does beg the question though..Is a club leisure ride purely for leisure at a leisurly pace and a training ride for pushing on to improve fitness.

I've yet to try out a Saturday club run, so have no experience but I had thought that the easy group averaged about 13mph.

Returning to cycling after a 45 year break I could possibly manage 13mph average but 15mph might be another matter.

You should have no prob with the 15 mph group, it is taken at a friendly pace, as with most groups (except the fast one) you can hear the sound of chatting above everything else!

Thanks Ian, I shall probably try a Saturday ride in a couple pf weeks time when, I'm free. I had hoped to have my new bike by then but sadly there has been a delay in the delivery of the frame. Which means I will have to use the hybrid that I commute to Westminster on.

Me too, I'm on holiday August though so I'll miss it then!

I don't like the final hill up past the church though....my legs go to pieces on that.

LOL well I need to get at least slick tyres for my MTB.....I've done the last two rides with knobby tyres, no cleats, no drops etc.... I'd definitely like to come though, lower the average age a bit (I'll be 16 by then).

I've been on one club ride. Two miles from the end I got a blow out of tube and tire. Other riders were kind enough to give me an inner tube and a tire patch (I'll return the tire patch, promise!!) I hope to go on more in sep - oct as summer is usually the time I do loads of charity rides.

I don't mind being pushed on a hard ride because my goal is to get better.
Which is what we all want I guess! :D
