Beastway helpers needed 21st July !

Postby rollerskate skinny (sylv) » Tue Jun 29, 2004 4:35 pm

Hello all

The Beastway racing season is now well under way with six races gone and four more to go, including the final round scheduled for Wednesday July 21st, which is the Addiscombe promoting round - your one chance to help with a mountain bike event this year!

For those of you who don't know about the Beastway series, it is a hugely successful grassroots evening series that celebrated its 10th birthday last year. Up to 200 riders of all ages and abilities (I had a workmate out for his first off-road there!), battling over a course that changes every week, which is usually pretty fast, not too technical and around 3 miles long. The races start from 7.30pm and last for more or less an hour, depending on the lap's length and the time the fastest riders take to complete it.

The course is based around the Eastway road cycling circuit in North-East London, on which I'm told Eddy Merkx has raced, and which used to be one of the finest in the country. There are generally a couple short road sections but most of it is off-road with short hills, narrow singletrack and even a bmx track with jumps and berms where most spectators choose to stand.

We will be needing upwards of 10 people for the duties of marshalling, time-keeping (from around 6.30pm or earlier) and if possible trail-marking (this takes place from 3pm in the afternoon, I intend to take a 1/2 day off work to go then), and everyone is welcomed to come give a hand even (and especially if) you have never watched a mtb race before (it's very exciting!) and of course cheer on the Addiscombe riders fighting for ranking points.

So please post here or email me (sgarde@clsholdings.com) if you can make it, or if you want further info.

The website is: http://www.beastway.com/series2004/index.html and the course is situated At Eastway Cycle Circuit, Quarter Mile Lane (formerly Temple Mills Lane), London E15 off the A12, here: http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/ ... productId=

Cheers

I'm possibly going to be on holiday then, but if not, I'll help out.

I'll be able to confirm nearer the time.

We have only three volunteers plus me so far. Anyone else would be kind enough to offer a hand?

Thanks

Thanks. Any other mountain bikers? (or roadies mind).

Last year we got £100 for the club paid by the organisers.

In case anyone else wanted to help but refrained because of the Tour de France Etape that day, I have just had confirmation that there is a TV at the Eastway HQ where you can watch it live, among other enthusiasts! And it's open all afternoon.

To everyone i've mailed to say thanks, i forgot the best bit, thanks for putting the course down so well! All we had to do after the race is drive round the course in Bill's pick-up and grab the poles and tape, all neatly wrapped and piled up. It only took us about 15 minutes.

I've also read a few messages on the Beastway forums saying how well the marshalls were cheering - one I think at the top of a climb which might have been the canal, said it made him make it to the top. Too bad Marek G. hurt his ankle so hope he's better. John has passed his thanks to everyone who helped too.

And those who were there early enough had the luck to see in person the lovely Nina Hossain from BBC London news, who did a short live link about the olympics at 6.30pm, and who even posed for me in front of the ACC banner. Oh yes!
