Handicaps for Dummies

Postby CaroleH » Thu May 29, 2008 8:26 am

I know this is going to be a really stupid question and I will win the award for the being the thickest this year :( , but can someone explain to me how the handicap system works. How is it worked out, what's the point and how is the winner the winner. Give me the lowdown!!!! Mr Green was all excited about it on Tuesday night and to be honest I didn't have a clue    Sorry Mr Green for not joining in in your excitement!!!!

:? Was I? Just please Rob won it on his fixie against all the technology  .

Don't know exactly how your handicap is calculated, no doubt there is some scientific formula. In a TT it's a time given to you based on your previous PB to theoretically provide a more level playing field of results between the fastest and slowest riders.

The fastest will be on scratch (no handicap, not an affliction), and the handicap you get will be based on your PB against his/hers. That way prizes can be won by slower riders and not just the same 2 or 3 people all the time. In the SCCU 10 on Saturday there are prizes for 1st to 3rd on handicap as well as just purely on your time. That allows you to go home with some money as well as Keith Coffey et al as in a straight up race they'll beat us everytime, so it can reward you for good rides and beating your PB.

I think that's it.

Hmmmm

You get allocated a handicap based on previous performances at distance.

I think there's a dusty tome sitting somewhere on a desk...in Gandalf's library.

In it are a load of tables that can be used to calculate said handicap.

The point...? Well it gives an incentive to improving slowpokes like me. I'm not going to win the event but if I'm putting in the effort and my performances are getting better then I may have a crack @ the handicap prize (incidentally not all events are handicapped). Example. George has a handicap of 30 seconds for the race this Saturday. I have 6 minutes  . These times are based on previous bests. So - when the race is over we'll both have a scratch time and a handicap time. If George does a 22 minute race then his handicap would b 21.30. If I do a 25 minute race then my handicap would be 19 minutes. So - George wins on scratch - I win on handicap.

Any use...?

The most accurate bit of handicapping I can recall was in 1961 in the 42 mile Purley to Brighton.
Keith Butler was off Scratch and I was on 13 minutes. He started 13 minutes after me and we crossed the line 1 hour 48 minutes later together.

Good question. Please let me explain.

Like I say - handicaps are based on previous performances. My track record over this distance (nay any distance) is simply not good.

29.26, 28.27, 29.29, 28.52, 28.20, 27.37.

Y'see

Short history lesson. I started this TT lark in 2004, I did a 10 in 29.26.

In 2006 I did 5 TTs. Two of those 10 times plus three 25s at 1.17.46, 1.14.06 and 1.14.41.

In 2007 I decided to up my game. I did this to push myself a bit, to make a contribution to the Rawson Shield and to prove to anyone in the club that this sport is accessible. I wanted to see more people breaking into TTing and I thought I should lead by example. So, with no training I did ten TTs including a DNF, four 10s, two 25s, a 50, a 100 and the Bec hill climb.

What happened? I helped to bring home the RS - along with a host of others of course. I achieved things I previously thought unachievable. I encouraged/cajoled folk to have a go. From a personal perspective I got a place in the SCCU BAR. To earn this you need to complete qualifying events at 25, 50 and 100. Yes - it was last place but I did it, only 20 other riders in the whole of the SCCU managed this.

Richv encouraged me to do the 100 and I've not forgiven him since  .

So - this winter just gone with richv's help and patience I started some training. I started the season with a PB of 1.11.10 over 25 miles. So far I've got that down to 1.04.50. If you want to see my goal for this coming Saturday, go to http://snoopdeloop.blogspot.com/

Now, after four stuttering years, I am no longer the guy who turns up to make everyone else look fast  . Health permitting I know I'm going to make huge improvements this year. I also know that my passion for including more and more people into this aspect of cycling is brighter than ever before. If I can squeeze the odd handicap prize along the way, well that's what they're there for innit 8) ?

Let's go racing :D

er, ok a slightly more thorough answer than I was expecting! :)
It was more I wondered why you'd got a 6 minute handicap when you're a damned sight faster than me... and I've got a 3.10 but not done a 10 before. :? very confusing.

For our evening club 10s, the handicaps are based on 20 minutes being the "scratch" time. So, take 20 minutes off your PB, and that's your handicap (rounded to the nearest 10 seconds to make Tim's calculations a bit easier at the end of the night). Then that handicap is taken off your actual finishing time to give your handicap time. Easy innit.

For novices/unknowns a bit of guestimation is used, we normally give complete novices an 8 minute handicap on the basis of 28 minutes being a reasonable target for a first timer on the Holmwood course. A bit of discretion is used for those riders who we know are a bit tasty from club run or road racing performances.

For open events, if you've not put a time on your entry form some organisers exclude you from the handicap competition, others give you a nominal handicap (usually based on half of the handicap of the slowest rider in the field).

I understand the 'Hemming' method. Last year I won the handicap over the ACC series - is that taking into account for all races or is it that I made the biggest improvement as a whole.
