Need lubricant for chain ??

Postby Nick » Sun Nov 21, 2004 3:24 pm

Any advise on what type of lubicant I should use?
(FOR THE BIKE NOT WHAT YOUR ALL THINKING  )
The bike I used yesterday in the SNOW and RAIN, as the chain has no lubricant at the moment.
Thank you :)

Chain lube

Postby Paul on the Pearson » Sun Nov 21, 2004 8:28 pm

I use Finish line Krytech (Geoff Butlers sell it) which is a dry wax lube, so doesnt attract as much road gunk, 7 quid a bottle. Im pretty diligent and lube each link, you'll need to top it up quite regularly or the chain starts to squeak which drives me mad. A good thorough degrease every now and then with a water soluble citrus degreaser, rinse and a spray with GT85 lube to clear the water out and re lube with krytech. If you can be bothered. Although saturday me fingers were so numb when I got home I just left it and sunday it was rusty.
Hope that helps
Paul

The general opinion is that dry lube gets washed off by the rain.
Commuters and MTBers often use Finish Line wet lube.

My "summer only" full suspension mountainbike gets the Krytech treatment.
All other mountainbikes in the stable get Finish Line dry lube in the summer (teflon loaded, light oil) and don't pick up much muck. In the winter they get Finish Line cross country wet lube which stays on the chain longer, but does let mud and gunk stick to it a bit more.
The road bike uses Finish Line dry lube pretty much all year (but doesn't leave home much when it's very wet)
The commuter and the new mountain/road Frankenbike winter hack use Finish Line cross country, with the occasional WD40 chainbath clean.

I like Finish Line chain lubricants.

No, the main sponsor appears to be the local pie shop!
