Well said that man. Not having been on a standard CR much while I've been poncing about on dual carriageways the route is okay for me lately when I have got out as I've had a chance to catch up with some folk. That said I don't like doing the same ride week in week out so during winter will be doing different routes. I tend to do this anyway when doing a run of CRs. Even without looking too hard at maps there are plenty of options, either heading out the Farthing Downs route way and then loads of lanes over there, or up Chipstead Valley towards Box Hill and a load of lanes over there.
I know some people like to know exactly where they are and where they are going and at what speed (which becomes an irrelevant measure once you go over different terrain, it's the effort) but if you state at the start that you're looking at something a bit different, might get lost and then re-find yourself and roughly what sort of group person it would suit then you generally get a few takers to join you and have a good ride.
As Alex says there is nothing to stop anyone doing alternate routes. Some of the ones I'll be doing won't go to the Charlwood cafe as I won't be heading in that direction, but that's not the end of the world and the countryside is full of cafes if you want a stop. I don't think a CR has to have everyone together, it's groups of Addiscombe riders going out together and having a good ride, whether a pootle to Charlwood or a charge to Bognor - my thrupence ha'penny

To further the point, Amy has been trying some excellent routes and just needs support and marketing to get these as a regular addition to the menu.
Also Mr Higg has been experimenting with an off road variant of the club run. Second outing this week with Maria on a Cross bike and Marky Mark trying the route down and returning on-road with the 16 mph group. I think that this is exciting and has real potential as we can bring on a whole new subsidiary of cycling, I await Marky Mark's view of the run.

Marky Marks view of the off road is pretty much not far off what I wrote in the OFF-ROAD write up.
It was a real eye opener to a totally different style of riding. When Aodan (Got thee spilling corroct thes tyme) shouts a warning of "Hole" you know it's not going to be just a crack in the tarmac or a sunken manhole cover! Even on the road run returning home, somebody shouted "hole", Aodan just said "That's not a hole" in the style of an Irish Crocodile Dundee... Quality.
I'm not sure if my bike is ready for another off-roader just yet. For some weird reason the chain keeps finding itself on the outside of the derailer (outside the cage of the lower jockey wheel), it has even cut 2 grooves in it, damn that chain.

Distance : 41.1 miles
Ascent : 2,268 ft
Av speed : 11.5 mph
Max speed : 32.5 mph
Av HR : 150
Max HR : 185
Fun factor : off the scale
