On Sunday I went to Huw's first ACC Go-Ride Cycling Skills Session. Why? My reason for going was to lend some support to Huw and to the group. Additionally I wanted to get a few more training hours in, so rode there and back. Little did I realise that I'd find myself enjoying and learning from the session.
The venue is ideal with a wide open tarmac area for Huw to lay out his multi-coloured cones. Also there's changing facilities and loos. Perhaps most important on the day was the radiator pumping out heat on a cold wet morning.
The session involved lots of relatively slow speed, controlled (hopefully!) riding. This is often done in very close proximity to other riders. This will enable new riders to gain confidence, plus I reckon, gain a feeling of being part of the Club. The surprise for me was that us "old hands" all seemed to have plenty to learn, improving with each exercise.
So, suggest anyone new to cycling, or new to cycling in groups, heads down to one of these sessions, but also don't rule it out for yourselves. I've you reckon you've nothing to learn, go there and prove it!
Thanks Huw.
