Adam,
I guess your anti Shimano jibe is aimed at me....but my "Campag" words of wisdom...

EITHER your return spring is knackered, or what is more likely is that the spring wears a groove in the mech, and sits at certain ponts and if used in the same gear for a long time, is reluctant to move from that point.

The hanger is straight.

Guess i'll have to rebuild it at some point... it does do an awful lot of mileage in crap conditions...

It sounds like the pivots are slightly corroded (this happens with all makes of rear mrchs).

The fix is to soak it with lubricant (as you have) and then to work it back and forth by hand a few dozen times. This will wear the corrosion away and (hopefully) get things working nice and smoothly again.
