Met helmet replacement

Postby Mike I » Thu Mar 05, 2009 1:42 pm

A colleague of mine got taken out by a Lamborghini* earlier this week. He's (sort of) ok, his bike's fine :D but his Met skid-lid needs replacing.

Does anyone know if they do a free replacement service and, if so, how to go about it?

*Actually, it was a thick cable running across the road to a workmen's generator, but it got your attention.

Mike, Have a word with the guys down at GB. I believe they have some kind of helmet replacement service. Probably in conjunction with helmet manufactures.

nobody does a FREE replacement service.

Canyon might I think, but their helmets are a joke. When I was working at Evans we had a big delivery of them, they retail at £2.50. yes, two pounds and fifty pence. I think we just destruction tested them all though, we definitely didnt sell any ;)

I only know of specialized's replacement service, which works out around 50% of the full retail price. I dont know about other brands.

Any idea as to how long helmets are meant to last without crashing? I've been replacing mine every three/four years or so but wiht the credit crunch have recently taken to wearing a woolly hat on alternate rides to prolong helmet life :D

[quote]Snell Memorial Foundation (SMF)
A non-profit Snell Memorial Foundation formed in 1957, named after William "Pete" Snell, a popular sports car racer who died of head injuries when the racing helmet he wore failed to protect his head.

The SMF promotes research and education, and also tests and develops standards to improve the effectiveness of helmets. In order to qualify for SMF certification, the helmet must pass a series of tests, which are determined depending on the application and the requirements of the standard.
The Snell Memorial Foundation - a non-profit organization dedicated to research, education, testing and development of helmet safety standards over the last 40-odd years - recommend you change your helmet about every 5 years.

'The 5 year replacement recommendation is a consensus position from both the helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials, plus general deterioration as a function of hair oils, body fluids, cosmetics, and normal 'wear and tear' all contribute to helmet degradation.

Additionally, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five year period due to advances in materials, design and standards.'

With helmets the polystyrene actually degrades from sunlight, it becomes pretty concrete-like after 3 years of normal riding. Try it and see. new helmets you can compress the polystyrene with a fingernail, old helmets* you can slam in a waist high safe door very hard and they wont compress. They will shatter. Which is bad.

If the polystyrene can be compressed its a good thing, they should crumple on impact, which is what saves you from a hard impact force. If the helmet shatters, all the impact force is transmitted directly to your skull. NICE.

So if you are a club rider, probably only 2 years use.

*as tried with my old 4 year old Oxford helmet.

Hmmm, how about wearing it all the time and maybe prolonging your life as opposed your helmet's.
