I agree with George that there is too much traffic furniture, lights, paint on the road etc, but for the time being at least it is there and they ain't going to rip it all down tomorrow. Personally I'm just of the opinion that if you use the road then you should obey junctions and lights whatever the vehicle and trying to segregate off different types for special treatment is, I feel, more likely to increase inter-vehicle rage of which there is enough already.
It's difficult to compare UK city roads to a lot of Europe and the US as the structure and layouts are completely different.
[quote="Toks"][quote="Andrew G"]Raise cyclist awareness and rights to use the roads, whilst also making it clear that cyclists who break the highway code face the same penalties/fines as motorists, job done. None of this 5 minute wonder sh1t that sounds good in theory during a power breakfast.
Er... you're not necessarily breaking the law even if your breaking the highway code. Should a cyclist receive a £30 on the spot fine because his lights are not illuminating the road properly I don't think so. Not enough power in your power breakfast Andrew? :D

Maybe I used "Highway Code" glibly but I'm happy to have spot fines for cyclists who don't have sufficient lights on their bikes. The red light jumpers and "stealth" idiots are the most dangerous people I come across commuting, far more so than any motorised vehicle. Why shouldn't you have a light that illuminates the road properly, don't you want to see where you are going? Even if you only cycle on well lit main roads then you should still have decent lights at night otherwise you may as well say it's okay for cars to drive on them only on side lights.

can't say I agree with you here, they are generally more a danger to themselves, I don't think I have heard of any cyclist ploughing into a group of people and killing the lot, as drivers sometimes do (including killing themselves and their passengers).

I find motorists exiting from side roads/private drives scary etc. Like recently there I was cycling into work on Kennington Road, in the bus lane, with a clear lane ahead and also no cars in the car lane. So I upped my pace when suddenly a truck going in the other direction decided to suddenly do a u-turn and obviously didn't see me. Luckily my brakes were working and slammed them on just in time to miss his front wheel. He continued on oblivious to the lights where I had a little shouting match with him.

Also, quite funny, I saw a cyclist and motor cyclist bump off each other as the cyclist moved out into the main traffic lane and the motorcyclist moved towards the kerb, neither of them signalling, or willing to give way.
