The race across the sky is, I understand, centred on the Leadville Trail 100 race, based (surpise, surprise) in Leadville Colorado.
The 2010 race is scheduled to start at 6:30am on Saturday 14th August 2010, So I would suggest that we fly out on or around the 31st July to do the road trip, and so that any competitors have 2 weeks at altitude before the race. (It usually takes me about 10 days to acclimatise when going to altitude in Colorado), then fly back after a copule of days post race rest.
Leadville is about 3 1/2 hours drive from Denver airport, so it would be perfectly possible to fly home the day after, and be back for work on Tuesday 17th (or even a "late shift" on Monday 16th).
I'd suggest an itinerary based around a mixture or Breckenridge (the area I know best), Crested Butte, Durango and maybe Fruita (but it'll be dead hot there). With a mixture of short, technical rides and longer, smoother, back country rides.
Should I open a new thread in the "sportives and trips" section?
Sylv: if you wanted to go on to the Bonneville speed week, you should expect a 12 hour drive from Leadville, and it would probably be a good idea to look at "open jaw" flight itineraries into Denver and back from Salt Lake City. United, Northwestern/Delta, and American Airways should offer suitable flights.
