another garage break in

Postby Elliot M » Mon Apr 14, 2008 12:39 pm

some *#!"£$ levered open my 6 month old garage door over the weekend. they discovered my mountain bikes firmly chained to floor anchors, so they stripped 2 of them down to the bare frames, literally removing all the other components, took my spare road wheels, 2 old frames and every single spare item down to cables and brake pads, pumps, old pedals. luckily the road bike and toolbox were in the house.

would appear to be carefully targeted - they knew what was in there and what was worth taking, nearby garages untouched.

insurance should cover it, but i really have no idea how to secure in future. alarm is an obvious step, as are extra locks welded on the outside. but what can i do? at least i have significantly less stuff if i were to store it in the house.

ANOTHER???? I truley feel sorry for you.
I'm glad my road bike lives in the house, permanently bolted to the turbo.
Sounds like your stuff was stolen to order. Is it possible to fit a tracker to a bike??? :twisted:

Elliot...

I had my garage done a year and a half ago...SE19, I don't where you are...

For what it's worth (probably not a lot to these people) I now have a Garage Defender...

Sorry to hear about it...

elliot, that's really Sh**te (for full effect say in Irish accent). This also cropped up on bikeradar some time ago and people were warned that profiles can be built using info on the net, like this forum, of bikes people have, areas where they live etc (some people had posted routes starting at their home address on google maps etc) probably safest not to post pics of new purchases etc.

Bad luck, that sounds nasty. You'd expect a big lock to put most people off as they wouldn't know the equipment's worth, or how to remove it. I hope the insurance pays out quickly.

Sorry to hear that, Elliot - that's a seriously sh*t thing to happen to you.

Once again we have to ask: WTF is it with some people?

You can tag bikes I think Mark, my Litespeed has a deactivated DataTag from the previous owner. If you have a drive leading to the garage, what my family does is drive right up to it, so you cant get to the garage.

check out the Xena XX10 or XN10 disc alarm - it fits nicely around a single or double chainset, £50 "buy-it-now" price on ebay (£0 postage)

I just bought one after a break in, the alarm is paralysingly loud at 120dB and is sensitive enough that if anyone touches any of your components on the bike, it'll go off. Also if its locked to chainring then the bar stewards cant even cycle off with it as the chainring/disk brake is clamped!

Alarm sounds for 15 seconds before re-arming, constant movement = constant alarm

Alarm cant be de-activated while clamped to the bike either, and no way to prise battery out. it has an internal sensor that arms the motion sensors if it cant "see" the outer casing, i.e. a disc brake/chainring is in the way, so arms automatically once you leave it on the bike. This means even if someone tries to tamper with it /de-arm it in any way, the alarm sounds. FUN. perfect for garages.

I have fitted something similar to these on my garage door they fit to the bottom corners and are additional to your generic garage door lock and can be operated from both sides

Make sure your garage door is fitted with 4 point locking system like this

Make sure you have knob type handle that can't be prised with a big lever such as a scaffold tube like this;

Not like this;

Alarm your garage with door and movement sensors

Lock your bikes to the floor with sunken steel concreted into the ground

p.s. don't forget and leave your bike outside :oops:
