Volunteering 2014

Postby Phil H » Mon Jan 13, 2014 7:36 pm

Hello all.

As some of you may be aware, I am maintaining a calendar of event here. This will be updated as we don't have all the info.

The first event that will require helpers is March 16th at Cyclopark for Ben's club race. Contact Ben or post in "Racing" for info.

The second event is our prestigious Open 25 mile Time Trial. Prestigious? Well because it's the first properly open 25 in the London South district of the season. In the past we have had full fields and last year we saw a multiple world champion and Olympic gold medallist (Jo Rowsell) racing. HQ should be the Broadbridge Heath Village Hall when I get confirmation.

The date is Sunday April 27th and the first rider is off at 6:30. All marshalls need to be in place by then. Yes I know it's antisocial but CTT regulations say we must clear the course by 10:00am.

I will need:
    Signing on
    Canteen
    2 x Pushers
    Marshalls
    3 x turn spotters
    2 x finish line spotters
    Sign putter-outer

Marshalls' duties are twofold: One is to direct the riders onto the correct route. The second is that by being visible (in hi viz) it alerts motorists to the fact that something is happening. Time trial marshalls are not to direct traffic at all but can warn riders if they will have to give way. Turn marshalls record the passage of each rider to make sure nobody cheats.

Under CTT regulations we cannot run the event without sufficient people (well we could but the organiser would be personally liable and ... let's just say we can't).

Offers of help welcomed either by PM or to phil dot hawkes at gmail dot com. Please let me know if you have a preferred role.

Teas but I'll need a lift to the Open 25. As early as possible. And if other marshals/volunteers could help supply cake and biscuity things :)

I've amended the announcement about marshalling and the like to show as many events as we know about. I'll try and update it as we find out definite dates and further events.

I've put you down as a possible Jon.

I've had some responses so far. Thanks all. I'm still in need of quite a few though.

A reminder that doing your marshalling duty means you're eligible for winning trophies and things like club sessions at the Olympic Velodrome as well as a mug sense of self-righteousness. More importantly you're doing your bit to keep the sport alive.

If anyone volunteered at the dinner: a) did you mean it? b) do I remember it? c) do you remember it? If in doubt drop me a mail/PM.

Great stuff Ron.

Note for volunteers: If there is anyone you would rather be (or not be) paired with at a marshall point then say so. Also, contrary to rumour it has actually only rained once at this event in the previous four editions.

I will need someone at the finish to text me (at the HQ) the times as they come in. So an ideal job for someone with a phone with lots of free texts.
